I couldn’t control myself any longer. I lunged forward and screeched, “Move!”
I threw two alphas to the ground with what felt like a single flick of my wrist. Humans - even human alphas - were so weak in comparison to us that it hardly felt fair to toss them around, but at the moment I had no sympathy for them. The only human I cared about was the young man in the center with the wide eyes and mouth-watering scent.
“Hey, what the fuck?” one of the alphas still standing remarked loudly. “What’s your problem, dude?”
His words were irritating, like a fly buzzing in my ear. I ignored him and stared instead at the young man. I realized with a shock that he was an omega.
A delicious smelling omega with blood trickling out of the corner of his mouth…
“Hey!”
One of the human alphas grabbed my shoulder. I didn’t move, but the human’s eyes widened. He must have been surprised that my skin wasn’t soft and fleshy. It could be, of course, if I wanted it to be. But the last thing I wanted right now was to be disturbed, and thus my skin was firm, like carved marble.
I shot him a nasty glare. “I suggest you release me.”
He did, eyes still wide.
I didn’t bother thanking him. I smiled down at the omega. I realized now he wasn’t too young, possibly in his early thirties - roughly the same age as I was when I was turned.
“Hey, buddy, I think you should apologize to our friends,” another alpha growled in my ear. I resisted the urge to uppercut his jaw and send him sprawling into the street. Instead of acknowledging him, I held my hand out to the omega.
“Hello, there,” I said.
The omega swallowed hard.
“Hey!”
The human alphas circled around me, like a ring of gnats. I let out a sigh. So this was the game they wanted to play. Humans were so predictable.
“Who the fuck do you think you are, hitting us like that?” one snapped.
“Yeah, I got dirt on my pants, thanks to you, asshole.”
The omega’s eyes flickered from me to the alphas, then back to me again. His expression was a silent plea. I wanted to soothe him, reassure him that I would do everything in my power to protect him from these obnoxious men.
But actions spoke louder than words. So instead of warning the humans to back off, I raised a single finger in warning.
“What the hell?” one of them muttered.
“We’re not scared of you,” another growled, taking a step closer. “Why don’t you piss off?”
I turned to face him. I willed Margaret’s fog to dissipate ever so slightly - just enough that the idiot in front of me could see a flash of bright, inhuman red in my eyes.
“If you are wise, you will leave us,” I told him slowly. “Now.”
He backed away. I didn’t need to smell his fear this time. It was written all over his face.
One of the alphas roared as he charged me with his fists. Before he could touch me, I simply raised a hand. The human ran into it, and sprung back with massive force, like he’d been hit by a train. He cried out as his body sprawled like a ragdoll against the concrete.
The others stared at me in disbelief. Behind them, the bus pulled up to the curb, splashing the back of their legs with melting slush, but none of them said a peep about it.
“I don’t want to fight you,” I told them, narrowing my eyes into a glare. “But I will if you force me. So I suggest you be smart little boys and go home.”
They hesitated for a split second before grabbing their downed friend and piling into the bus like their lives depended on it.
I made a display of sighing and throwing my hands up in the air as I turned back to the omega. “Alphas can be so silly, can’t they?”
He nodded warily. I could tell he still didn’t trust me, even after I’d saved him. That was fine. He sat on the shelter bench, huddled in the corner. I kneeled down to bring myself to his level and show him I wasn’t a threat.
