Since he was still out like a light, I decided to surprise him with a large breakfast. I quickly showered in the suite, put on a house robe, and descended to the dining hall to summon the bat servants.
Unfortunately, before I reached the kitchen, I was greeted by Margaret and her unpleasant expression.
“There you are,” she growled.
“Problem, mother?”
She crossed her frail arms. “So, you’ve been with the omega for the past two days.”
Only two?I thought. It felt like many more, but I’d clearly lost track of time.
“And?” I prompted.
Margaret grunted. “I assume you’ve been… consummating.”
I couldn’t help the small smirk appearing on my lips. “Of course.”
“And the omega is pregnant?”
“He should be,” I said. “His heat broke earlier today. It should be safe for Adriel and Theo to be around him again.”
But Margaret didn’t seem to listen - or even care. She was already walking away. “Confirm the pregnancy as soon as possible. If it doesn’t take, I’m going to get rid of him.”
Anger flared inside me. I cut her off. “What?”
“You heard me, Pierce,” Margaret said evenly.
“Mother, it’s only been a couple of days,” I growled. “There’s no way to know yet.”
“I don’t care!” she snapped.
I was taken aback by the hideous tone of her voice. I’d never seen her so openly furious.
Adriel ran into the hall, clearly shocked by Margaret’s outburst. “Is everything all right?”
“Yes,” I said.
“No, it isn’t!” Margaret cried. “Pierce is being utterly foolish and insolent.”
“Excuse me?”
She turned her nasty glare on me. “You heard me, boy. You act disobedient at every turn. Why won’t you just listen to your poor mother?”
Adriel looked at me, shocked and confused.
“Mother,” I said slowly, trying to hold my temper. “I don’t understand what you’re saying. I’ve done everything you asked. I found an omega, I brought him here, and mated with him. What else is it you want?”
“We need the childnow,” Margaret hissed.
I was mostly angry, but for some reason, I felt a pang of sympathy for her as well. She obviously wasn’t thinking clearly. “Well, there’s nothing I can do to speed up the process. I’m sorry.”
Thankfully, Adriel came to intervene. He put his hands on Margaret’s small shoulders. “Mother, Pierce has done everything he can. All we can do now is wait.”
But instead of being soothed, Margaret whirled on Adriel with her fangs bared in a hiss. “And you! You and that brother of yours have done nothing to help me!”
Adriel blinked in shock. Even I was in awe. Despite her recent angry outburst, she never had anything bad to say about Theo - until now.
Something worried me. Why was she acting like this? She was incredibly desperate, completely unlike her usual noble composure. Maybe she was more ill than any of us thought.
