Despite the furrow in Dante’s brows, he looked surprised. “Youdid?”

“Yup. All me. And apparently the babyhelped.”

“What doyoumean?”

Ryu explained his theory that my pregnancy was enhancing my magic. Dante took in all the information but didn’treact.

“He’s truly gifted,” Ryu said, smiling at me. “You should be proud,Dante.”

I looked to my mate for approval, but to my surprise, found none. He didn’t look happy at all. A deep frown was still etched acrosshisface.

“Dante?”Isaid.

He didn’t look up from his untouched tea. “Yeah. It’samazing.”

He didn’t soundamazed.

Ryu glanced awkwardly back and forth between us. “Would anyone like something to eat? Gabriel, if you’re up to it?” heoffered.

Dante stood suddenly. “I think we shouldgohome.”

“What?”

Ryu said nothing. He glanced at mesympathetically.

I couldn’t stand it anymore. I firmly locked eyes withmymate.

“Dante, what is going on?” Idemanded.

“I don’t think you should practice magic anymore,”Dantesaid.

“What?”

“Not now, not while you’re pregnant.” He avoided Ryu’s gaze. “Nothere.”

My jaw dropped. I was too shocked tospeak.

“Let’s go home,” Dante muttered. “Please.”

Ryu was hurt. He wrapped his shaking fingers aroundhiscup.

I was too stunned to react. As I followed my mate out of the school, I glanced over my shoulder at Ryu, who stared sullenly down at the table. Dante didn’t say goodbye to hisfriend.
