Milky sunlight filtereddown through the early morning mist. I grumbled and covered my eyes with my forearm. I heard a small murmur and felt a body stir on top of me. As I came to, I realized Niko was still asleep on top of me, and I remembered all the events of the previous night. I don’t remember putting our clothes back on, but we were dressed - which was a good thing, too, because it was chillyoutside.
I tried to sit up without waking him, but he awoke at the same time I did. We smiled at eachother.
“Good morning,” he said with a shy yet mischievousglance.
“Morning,” Ireplied.
“So… Last night wasn’t a dream after all, Iassume?”
My face broke out into a grin. “Nope.Totallyreal.”
He looked down at his body and adjusted his clothes, as if just to make sure I was telling the truth and he hadn’t made it up. Convinced, he turned his attention back to me. He grinned, threw his arms around me and buried his face in mychest.
“You’re always so warm,” hemurmured.
“It’s because I’m an alpha,” I said. “It’s my job to keepyouwarm.”
He suddenlyfrowned.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, liftinghisface.
“We had sex last night,” he murmured. “And you… knotted me. If I’m really not infertile, then what happens if I getpregnant?”
“Then we’ll have a beautiful babytogether.”
He smiled weakly, but it quickly turned back into a worried frown. “That’s not what I mean. We can’t raise achildhere.”
“Yes, you’re right,” I growled. “Even more reason for us to get the hell out of thisplace.”
He nodded seriously. “To be honest, I didn’t reallyget itbefore. But now, just thinking about my child growing up in a place like this… It’ssickening.”
“I know.” I nuzzled him comfortingly. “Our child will be raised somewhere much nicer than this, don’t youworry.”
Niko swallowed hard as he glanced over his shoulder. His gaze was glassy as he looked off into the distance in the direction ofthetown.
“I don’t want to go back there,” hewhimpered.
Part of me was relieved, because I didn’t want to see him in a jail cell ever again, but at the same time that caused a whole other set of problems for us. Since we were both already out, we needed to use this time wisely. But to escape, we needed Virgil’s help - and he was nowhere tobeseen.
“You don’t have to go back,” I promised him. “You’ll never see the inside of that building, or any other Scarlet Ridge building everagain.”
“Thank you,” he murmured, then let out aheavysigh.
“What’swrong?”
“I’m worried about Virgil,” he said. “We haven’t seen him since lastnight.”
I stroked Niko’s hair to calm him down. “I’m sure he’s fine. He’s a strong alpha, and with, what? Two different animal forms? He can definitely take care of himself. Don’tworry.”
“You’re right,” he said withasigh.
“You’re bothright.”
Niko and I nearly jumped out of our skin at the sound of the sudden voice coming from the trees. I whirled around, holding my mate safely in my arms in case of a confrontation. But the person who had spoken burst outlaughing.
