Wesley

Someone knocked at the door.I was expecting it to be Ken again, but a different voice rang from the other side of the door -Mason’s.

“Can I come in?” heasked.

I really wasn’t in the mood to see anyone - except maybe Ken - but it wasn’t like I could say no. My body was hot and feverish and I could barely move. It was too much effort to tell him togoaway.

“Yeah,” Icroaked.

Mason came inside. “Hey.” He came and strode over until he was sitting on the floor, looking at me. He almost looked like he wanted something from me, but I didn’t know whatitwas.

“So, uh, Ken was talking to us,” Mason began. “He was feeling crappy because he doesn’t know what to do aboutyourheat.”

My whole body felt like it was on fire. I didn’t know why Mason was talking to me, nevermind trying to get an intelligent response outofme.

“That’s a whole ‘nother issue. But there’s something else I wanted to talk to you about.” Mason looked at me seriously, and the atmosphere shifted. For the first time since arriving in Indigo Mountain pack, I felt uneasy. Like I didn’t quitebelong.

“The other day, when you ran out of the building, you kept asking me who the top alpha of this pack was andwherehe was,” Mason continued, holding mystare. “Why?”

I felt horribly trapped. My body wouldn’t move, and a growing aching need was forming in the lower half ofmybody.

“Wesley,” Mason said, “Answer me,please.”

“Why do you care?” Isnapped.

Taken a bit aback, he replied, “Because, to be completely honest, I don’t know if I can trust you. Ifanyof us cantrustyou.”

My blood ran cold. This was the absolute worst scenario. I was vulnerable and incapacitated, barely able to move, and Mason was so close to figuring out who I was. He was already suspicious of me. I had to clear my name, fast, before he told anyone else about his suspicions - but I could barely think. How was I supposed todothis?

“Why?” I asked, my voicehoarse.

“Because you don’t seem interested in living here. Because you ran out in a hurry, begging me to tell you where the top alpha is, without even knowing that there isn’t one here.” He narrowed his eyes. “Because you’re playing with Ken’semotions.”

“What?” I snapped. “That’snottrue!”

“He thinks you hate him,” Mason growled. “Or at least that you’re upset with him. And that’s not all. We had another traitor in our midst not too long ago…” He shook his head, looking visibly upset. “I won’t let that same thing happenagain.”

“I’m not a traitor,” Igrowled.

“Thenproveit.”

I didn't say anything. I couldn’tproveit.

“Tell me one good reason I shouldn’t tell Ken about my suspicions,”Masonsaid.

“IlikeKen,” I snapped. “Okay? I have feelings for him, ones he didn’t seem too damn interested in reciprocating. And now he barely talks to me because of this stupid heat. And even if Ididn’tlove him, there’s nothing I can do anyway. There’s no top alpha here. Gunner sending me to infiltrate this pack was a joke. I’m sick and injured and just a stupid omega. So you don't have to worry about me ruining your precious pack.” I buried my face in the pillow, wishing the world would just go away. “Leave mealone.”

For a while Mason didn't move. Then he slowly got up. I heard his footsteps leave the room and descend the stairs. Finally. I just wanted to suffer with this stupid heat in peace, and it had only justbegun.

But then, footsteps returned. The door opened again and multiple people shuffled inside. My head shot up. Mason and Ken were both standingtherenow.

“I think you should tell Ken what you told me,” Mason said quietly, looking me intheeyes.

Ken’s face was full of concern and anxiety. “What’s going on? Wesley? Mason said there was something important I needed to hear. Areyouokay?”

“I…” I looked back and forth between them. Mason wasn’t going to let this go until I told the entire truth, if I was ready to tell it or not. I had no doubts that he would be the one to tell Ken if I didn’t. My throattightened.
