Scout’s face lit up. Killian thought that if his face got any redder, he would burst into flames. “Y-yes, of course.”
“Good,” Killian said. He pulled the luxurious comforter back to expose the fresh, clean white sheets underneath. Scout gasped as he saw there were already two matching pillows at the head of the bed. Killian scoffed. “The maid must have heard about me choosing a mate today.”
Scout sighed. “I’m sure I’m not what she - or anyone else - had in mind.”
Killian growled. “Don’t talk like that.” He slid into bed and gestured for Scout to join him. The omega slunk next to him, still looking awkward and out of place. Killian took his jaw and forced Scout to look at him. “Listen to me. Out of all those omega, I pickedyou.I don’t care about what you have. I care about who youare.”
Scout’s brows were still furrowed in concern. “But we hardly know each other.”
“Don’t you feel it?” Killian asked. He squeezed Scout’s arm gently.
Scout looked confused. “Feel what?”
“Maybe it’s an alpha thing.” Killian sighed. “When the guards were coming after you, something… happened inside me. It was like something snapped. It was the angriest I’ve ever been in my life. I couldn’t bear the thought of anyone hurting you.”
Scout’s eyes softened. “Killian…”
A low growl rumbled in Killian’s chest. “I’ve heard of it before. Of fated mates not being entirely in sync in the beginning.” He smiled. “It’s just one more thing we’ll get through together.”
Scout smiled back, wide and genuine. “Yeah.”
Killian couldn’t help himself. He leaned over, took Scout’s face in his hands and kissed him chastely on the lips. The omega’s face was incredibly warm from blushing so hard. Killian’s fingers felt like ice against his skin.
When Killian pulled back, he murmured, “Goodnight, Scout… my mate.”
Scout, still dazed from the innocent kiss, murmured back, “Goodnight, Killian.”
