“Well, why just a friend? Is she pretty? Semi-normal?”
“Are those literally the only criteria you look for in finding me or Ben a girlfriend?” Gavin asks.
“Semi-normal?” I repeat.
“You’re both thirty-five. It’s time to start looking for something serious. Look how happy both of your brothers are.”
“If I recall, Aiden was thirty-nine when he met Jessa and Lincoln was thirty-six when he ruined Penny’s life,” Gavin says.
Lincoln gives him the middle finger, while Aiden rolls his eyes.
“I’m sorry. Is it such a crime to want to see my sons happy and settled? Who knows how long I have left on this planet.” She sighs and I grimace.
“Really, Mom. The death card?”
“If common sense doesn’t work, maybe guilt will.”
“You want us to find girlfriends out of feeling guilty?” Gavin says and mom takes a deep breath, taking a swig of her wine.
“I’m just saying that you both have a lot to offer someone and that life is hard and walking through it with someone else is a beautiful thing. I just want my kids to be happy,” she says, holding my father’s hand on top of the table.
“Mom, we are happy. You don’t have to worry about us. Plus, you already gave me the best wombmate,” I say, grinning at Gavin, who rolls his eyes, but there’s no heat to it.
“Sometimes I really think I should’ve been an only child,” Aiden says, and Jessa lightly smacks his chest.
“Alright then. I’ll let it go for now. I just want you two to think about it. You have all this success and, of course, you have each other to share it with, but I can promise you, it’s a magical thing being able to share your success with a romantic partner.”
“We’ll take it under advisement,” Gavin says and the chatter around the table finally goes in a different direction that no longer involves our dating life—thank fuck.
My phone buzzes in my pocket, and I pull it out discreetly under the table.
Kate
I think I need some material to get myself off tonight.
Is the memory of my head between your thighs not good enough? I clearly need to up my game.
Kate
I need visuals. With sound.
I’m at family dinner.
Kate
Is that supposed to make me want it less? Because it’s kind of the opposite now. Don’t you have a childhood bedroom you could sneak off to?
I’m going to need some motivation so I can get this done quickly.
Kate
Not too quickly ;)

“Fuck,” I grumble under my breath.
“Everything okay, Benjamin?” my mom asks and I give her a quick nod.
