“I’d like to wait until you're more settled and have more time training with Toth, if you don’t mind.”

She looks at me the same way Blair does when she’s irritated but suddenly perks up. “Toth will be the one training me?”

“Yes. He and Lilith are the only people I’d trust with something so important.”

“I’m sure I could learn something from both of them. I want to live in my own body with a sound mind and never let someone take advantage of me ever again.”

Anger fills me when I think about everything Beelzebub possibly told her about me, about Hell, but I tamper it down. “No one will ever second guess the princess of Hell ever again.”

She grins at the title and takes a bite of her sandwich. Today went far better than I could have imagined. Mara doesn’t look at me like she hates me, she looks eager to learn and get to know me. It’s far more than I deserve, but I’ll take it.

Chapter thirty

Thenextfewdaysat the manor have been magical and odd at the same time. With both of Lucifer’s daughters fully in his life now, there are definitely some growing pains. Mostly adjusting to sharing the manor and Mara learning how to be a normal, functioning demon.

“When do I get to torture people?” she asks as she lowers her teacup to the table.

“What?”

“I thought that was the whole point of being a demon, torturing people,” Mara says matter-of-factly.

“I’m sure if you want to work in the pit, your father will arrange it.”

“So you and my daddio, huh?” she questions, changing the topic suddenly.

“Yes,” I reply, and she takes a sip of her drink.

“You two don’t leave the manor much. I guess it’s difficult when you’re banging like feral animals.” I gape at the pretty demon.

“Um, right. We just leave from time to time.”

“Interesting. My father said Beelzebub’s soul was destroyed.”

I swallow at the lie and wonder why he didn’t tell her that he’s basically the human-like punching bag that I visit every night.Perhaps he doesn’t want him tainting her mind further?

“Right.”

“Shame, really. I would have enjoyed torturing him.”

I go to answer her when Toth enters the room. As soon as he does, a huge grin spreads over Mara’s face.

“Mara, it’s time for your lesson,” he informs her, and she nods.

She leans over so only I can hear. “Are all the male demons this fucking hot?”

I clear my throat and look over to Toth. “No, not all of them.”

“I can’t wait to get out of this mansion and see what else is out there.”

“Your father said not yet,” Toth replies, and Mara rolls her eyes.

“I know, warrior-demon-daddy, you want to keep me all to yourself, but I’m not a one demon kind of a girl. You’ll have to learn to share.”

“We’re just training,” he says, looking frustrated.

“You keep telling yourself that,” she replies, shaking her head.

The circus leaves the dining room, and I close my eyes while sipping my tea. Mara isn’t wrong, I do feel like it’s been a long time since we’ve left the manor.
