“So… your daughters… they’re both in Hell.”

He groans, letting go of me and flopping down onto the bed. I easily crawl onto the bed and straddle him.

“I’m not sure who I need to apologize to first.”

“Just give them time. Let them know you care and be honest with them.”

“That’s all I need to do?”

“It’s a start.” He groans again, and I lay on top of his large body, liking his warmth and size. “And be nice to Dax.”

He puffs out an irritated sound while rolling his eyes. “Fine.”

I sit up and look down at him. “I’m going to get a few things done. We can all have breakfast in the morning.”

He nods, and I lean down to kiss him before leaving the room.

Satan himself just apologized to me. I feel a whirlwind of emotions, but gratification is the highest on the list.

Chapter twenty-nine

It’sbeenanabsolutecluster fuck these last few days. I had to threaten some witches to get Blair’s magic back, come to terms with the fact that she’s with Daxaddon, and accept that she doesn’t want to live in Hell full-time. Not that she’s explicitly said so, but it’s clear. It’s disheartening, but I always wanted her to live fully, and I completely understand that it’s hard to live that way in Hell.

Mara, on the other hand, is a completely different story. She seems to like it here; more than like it here, she loves it here.

Lilith is sleeping next to me, the cat curled above her head, and I pet the little fucker, making him purr lightly.

“Knew you liked the cat,” she taunts sleepily, and my hand immediately flies off the fur.

“I don’t like the cat.”

“I can taste your lies, and they’re so sweet,” she replies, imitating me, and I can’t help but tickle her side. She jolts up, trying to escape, but it’s no use as I pull her onto my lap. Her hair is an absolute mess, but she looks perfect like this. She looks truly happy, and the realization that I’m part of that happiness means everything to me.

“What are you doing today?” she asks.

“You’re my assistant, you tell me.”

“Your daddy-daughter date with Mara.”

I roll my eyes and nod. “I’m not sure what my read on her is. Blair is simpler, she forgives me, but she’s still bitter.”

“The women in your life are very petty. Maybe you should reflect on why that is.”

“Mmm,” I hum while kissing her exposed shoulder.

“I don’t think Mara is that complicated,” she says, shrugging her shoulders. “I think she’s been lost for a long time and finally feels like she’s somewhere she belongs.”

“I failed her.”

Lilith pushes my shoulder. “You’re so annoying sometimes, you know. Mara doesn’t want your guilt or your self-loathing. She wants a Dad, she wants to be loved, and she wants to live. Can you imagine what it was like to live from possession to possession for all those years? You finally gave her a body, and from the way she’s constantly checking herself out in the mirror, it’s clear she likes it. Sure, tell her you’re sorry, but don’t dwell on it. She’s more eager for the future you’ll share together.”

“When did you become so wise?”

“While I haven’t had all eternity,” she says, jabbing my chest. “I think I know a little bit about Hell being the place where I fit in the most. I think Mara feels the same. Just tell her how much you care, that’s all she wants to hear.”

She pushes my loose hair behind my ear and kisses my cheek. “You better go get ready.”

“I have ten more minutes.”
