“She can’t know who we are.” I furrow my brows and look at him as he shakes his head. “It’s for her protection.”

“How exactly could she summon you?” I ask as a blonde woman steps out of the forest cottage. Her nose is up in the air as she plants her hands on her hips.

He sighs as he looks at the woman in front of him. “Because she’s part witch.”

He walks forward as Blair’s mom glares at him, then me, and then at Blair. “Stay out here while we talk,” the woman spits at Blair.

The little girl rolls her eyes and stands next to me as Lucifer gives me a look that says he doesn’t want to go in the cottage, but he does anyway. I try not to tell the witch she should mind who she’s speaking to, but that’s her own funeral. So, here I am, standing outside the cottage with a small child who happens to be the spawn of Satan.

“So you’re what, his girlfriend?” Blair asks, leaning against a tree, her arms folded.

“Assistant,” I reply, and she scoffs.

We hear some shouting coming from the cottage, and we both wince.

“He didn’t know about me?” she asks softly, and I shake my head. Her eyebrows furrow, and her eyes turn blue. “How did you find me?”

I’m not sure how pissed Lucifer is going to be at me for doing this, but when I look down at Blair, I see so much of myself. I crouch down to get to her level, and I push every ounce of persuasion I can into my words.

“He didn’t know about you, but he must have felt you calling him. You’re wanted and special. Never let anyone put you down, you’re meant for great things, Blair.”

“I am?” she asks softly.

“Definitely.”

There’s some more shouting from the cottage until Lucifer storms out, no sign of Blair’s mother as he calms himself and gives Blair a smile.

“Are you hungry?” he asks the little girl.

She shrugs. “Sure?”

“What’s the best place you can think of, wherever you want to go.”

She smiles as she thinks. “Carly’s Crabs?”

“You got it,” he says. “Go get cleaned up, and we’ll go.” She smiles and runs into the house to get changed.

“So… you’re a dad.”

“I guess, yeah,” he says shyly, his hands in his suit jacket as he looks down at the ground. “Is that a problem for you?”

“Why would it be, I’m just your assistant.”

“Right,” he says, looking back at the house. “She can’t remember you,” he says softly.

“She doesn’t even know my name,” I say, trying to reason with him, and I wonder why he’s being so secretive of her and me.

“It’s the best for both of you. She can’t know what we are or who I really am. She needs to stay with her cunt of a mother, even if I don’t like it.”

“Can’t we bring her to Hell with us?”

He shakes his head. “She’s only half demon, and I don’t think it’s fair to her.”

I think about all the souls I’ve seen in Hell, and of course, there are no children. I nod my head and agree with his terms.

“Can I say goodbye?”

He nods his head and smiles as Blair comes running out of the house. “This is the best birthday ever,” she says. I see a genuine smile take over Lucifer’s face, and in that moment, I decide there’s no way that he’s the monster that I thought he was. I get down to Blair’s level to speak to her again.
