Whereas Hell is gloomy and gothic, the fae realm is… beautiful. The grass is the greenest I’ve ever seen, and the castle in front of us looks like something from a fairy tale. There are flowers trailing up the cream-colored towers, and I’m awestruck.
“You can just come here anytime you want?” I ask in disbelief.
“It’s not all it seems,” he retorts as we walk side by side. The gates open, and we walk through. It’s then I see fae walking past us. They are all right around Elvors height. They’re all slightly taller than Lucifer, and they do not look like they belong in a fairy tale.
Most are dressed in warrior regalia with blood covering their face and body. When I look to the left, I see three men hanging from what looks like a medieval gallow. Instinctively I take a step closer to Lucifer and avert my eyes from where their bodies hang. The place feels more ominous, not just because of Lucifer’s words, but because of the stark contrast of how this realm looks versus the people in it.
“It’s best you don’t speak,” Lucifer tells me as we approach the castle doors. Usually, I would retort back with something sassy, but I find his words wise, so I shut my mouth. I look up at him to see him smirking at me before the doors open, and we enter.
“Lucifer,” the man on the throne says. He’s a massive man with forearms the size of my thighs, and he’s heavily scarred. His stance is relaxed as he sips on a stein of beer, and I watch as it drips into his ginger beard. “Who’s the snack?” he asks, licking his lips and looking at me.
I instantly regret the Daisy-Duke attire that I wore to get under Lucifer’s skin.
“Drugon, I’m here. What is it you want?” Lucifer demands sharply. He doesn’t look at me, just faces down the fae king in front of us.
“As you know, my realm is at war.” Lucifer doesn’t answer, if anything, he looks bored with the conversation. “I was hoping you could spare some demon fae to come to the realm and help the cause.”
Lucifer smiles. “And why would I do that?”
“My entire army will trade their souls to Hell to win this war,” Drugon offers, and while Lucifer doesn’t move or change his expression, I can tell he’s thinking this over.
“I’ll consider your offer,” Lucifer says before spinning around. I stand there like an idiot for a moment before I have to nearly jog to catch up to him. Our feet hit the cobblestones, and I’m glad I at least wore comfortable shoes.
“That’s it, that’s the whole meeting?”
“Somethings wrong,” he says softly, his brows furrowing when he looks down at me. “Fuck,” he groans. He grabs my arm roughly, and I’m violently portaled again, but this time when we land I know exactly where we are.
“Why are we in Hallowsdeep?” I ask.
“Something doesn’t feel right,” he says again. He looks at me a little panicked as we walk down mainstreet. “Perhaps you should portal back to Hell?” he says it softly, not in his usual dickish tone.
“I can help,” I reply, not knowing what exactly it is I’m to be helping him with. But in no way am I going to miss an opportunity to figure out piece by piece what’s going on in this man’s head.
Lucifer sighs and rubs his neck. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”
“Then I think it’s probably a great idea. So what are we looking for, sir?” He stills slightly after I say ‘sir’, and I can’t help but smirk. So the man likes it when I call him sir, not surprising from a control freak who calls himself the ‘king’ of Hell.
He looks around and groans, I guess realizing that I will keep nagging the shit out of him or that he’s going to have to tell me one way or another.
“A child,” he says softly.
“We're here to look for a child?” I ask in confusion. “Listen man, if you’re into abducting kids and bringing them to Hell this isn’t going to work out. That’s just wrong.”
“Shut up,” he growls.
“No you shut up. What kind of sick shit—”
He covers my mouth with his hand and sighs. “My child,” he corrects.
My brows furrow as I take in his honest expression and look around mainstreet. “You have a kid… on Earth?”
“I… I didn’t know I had one.”
“So what? You came up to Earth and were a total slut and didn’t know you got someone pregnant?”
“Someone fucking kill me,” Lucifer mumbles under his breath. “I knew it was a possibility, but I swear I was just summoned with blood, and the only way someone could do that is if they had my blood or are of my blood.”
I blink at him a few times. He looks shy and a little irritated with himself. “I mean, I guess we should start with the women you fucked while you were here.” It’s the first time I’ve seen his cheeks heat, and as cute as it is, knowing he banged half this town pisses me off. “Okay, so maybe we’re better off lining up all the children in town and seeing which ones look like you?”
