Chapter nine

Ihaven’tbeenthisexcited for a day of work in all of eternity. I hardly slept, not that I need much rest, but still. I’m not sure when it hit me to create this role for Lilith, but it’s genius. It’s a way to force her to be around me all day, every day, and it also ensures that she doesn’t spend too much time out of the realm. I need her here, in Hell, where I know she’s safe. It’s also a part of my plan to woo her, which I’m not feeling extremely confident about. Nor am I feeling confident about her ability to manage her attitude while working for me.

From what little I’ve seen of her temperament, I know she has the ability to piss people off, and that’s not what I need from her. I need for her to lie low, be undetected, and most importantly, safe. I know that I have my fucking work cut out for me before she even walks into my office.

She’s wearing shorts so short I can nearly see the indent of her pussy lips, and her red top clings to her chest, showing off her midriff. Her long blonde hair is in a braid that she has flung over her shoulder.

This is going to be fucking torture.

“So, what do you need me to do, boss-man?” she asks, clearly not pleased with the task of being my assistant.

I take a moment before I answer her to admire her long legs and how defiant she looks as she stares at me.

“First things first,” I start standing from my desk and collecting the golden box off the shelf. Her interest piques as she tries to stand on her tiptoes to see what’s in the box. I turn it towards her, opening it and allowing her to see the golden chain with the obsidian crystal nestled gently against the velvet interior of the box.

“What’s that for?”

“You,” I reply, and she rolls her eyes.

“Okay, but why?”

“It’s a communicative necklace. It allows either of us to portal to the other’s current location. All you need to do is squeeze it and say my name. I have its twin,” I say, tugging the necklace from beneath my collar and showing her. She flinches at the word twin, but she shakes it off, not wanting to show me any weakness or to hide her own pain, I’m unsure.

“And why do I need this?”

“You’re my assistant. It will make it easier for you to get to me this way.” She arches an eyebrow at me, and I’m not sure if she knows if I’m full of shit or not. Sure, it will make her job easier, but really it’s a way for me to constantly keep tabs on her.

“Fine,” she sighs and turns around. Holding her braided hair to the side. I unclasp the necklace and put it around her delicate throat. When she turns around, the crystal lies delicately against her collarbone, and I smile, knowing that I have direct access to wherever she is at any time in any realm.

“Very well, shall we start?”

“Sure,” she says as I hand her a pen and paper.

“Your job will be to help me manage my daily tasks, meetings, and schedule.”

“The Devil has meetings?”

I glare at her and lean on my desk. “Yes. I—Lucifer—have meetings.” I hand her a ledger that communicates with my own. It automatically updates when anything is scheduled so she can keep track and she could add to my tasks as well. “These are the meetings on today’s agenda.” I hand her a pen that is able to add events and notes to the ledger, and she takes it, tapping it against the notebook.

Her eyes scroll through today’s meetings as well as the next months'. She nearly drops the ledger when she reads what’s planned at the end of the month. “You… You have a meeting with the angels?”

“I do,” I nod, and I can see the irritation take over her face when I don’t go into further detail. “Be a good girl, and perhaps you will get to attend.” That shuts her up. I’m not sure if it’s the use of the term ‘good girl’ or the idea that she will get to meet with the angels. I don’t want to shatter her excitement by telling her the chances of seeing her sister are slim. We will just need to take this win for what it is.

Her finger tracks the meetings for today. “What is this meeting?” She points to the symbols that she can’t read, and I sigh.

“The fae realm,” I groan.

“Why do you have to meet with them?”

I run my hand through my hair and wonder how much I can trust Lilith. I know she’s mine, but she doesn’t know that. My loyalty to her isn’t the same loyalty she has gifted me with—yet.

“They are currently at war. The king has requested a meeting with me.”

“People can just request meetings with you? If you want to cut down your schedule, why don’t you just tell them to fuck off?” she asks.

“As much as I would love to do that, it’s easier to just keep things cordial with the different realms, trust me.”

“Okay.” She eyes the schedule one more time and looks at me. “You were supposed to be in the pit ten minutes ago,” she says quietly. I smirk at her and grab her arm. She doesn’t pull away as we portal to the pit.
