“The fuck do you think you’re doing, Felix?”
“What’s it to you, Martel?”
“She told you not to touch her.”
“You know these puck bunnies like to play games.”
“She’s not a puck bunny, and even if she fucking was, no means no, you fucking dick.”
Felix goes to push himself off the wall, but Mikael pushes him back against the hard surface.
“What’s your fucking deal? She’s not yours.” Mikael just pushes him against the wall again, and Felix laughs and grins. “Martel pussy whipped. Never thought I’d see the day.” Felix looks over at me. His gaze is predatory, and I feel uncomfortable and wrap my arms around myself. “Guess I can get the appeal on this one. She does smell sweet. You share?”
Mikael fists his shirt and pushes him so hard against the wall I swear I can hear Felix’s bones rattle.“Tu la touches encore et je te casse les doigts, asshole.”Mikael shoves him one more time until he comes and puts an arm around my shoulder and walks me to the bathroom. Mikael is huge when we’re just standing next to each other. He’s on skates while I’m in sneakers, so he’s basically a giant. “Are you okay?” he asks softly once we’re by the bathroom door.
“He’s not the first Alpha who thinks he’s god’s gift to Omegas or can take what doesn’t belong to him.”
“You don’t belong to anyone.” It feels like someone’s just punched me in the chest when he says the words. I nod and turn to the bathroom door. His large hand shuts it, and I startle. A sigh escapes me, and I turn to look at him. He’s looking down at me, his brown eyes giving me no clue to how he’s feeling. “I’ll wait out here till you’re done.”
I nod and go into the bathroom. I’m so fucking frustrated I could scream. Is it pathetic that I was hoping maybe he would take it back? I don’t know what he said to Felix in French. All I caught was asshole. But I guess he’s just being a good friend to Eli and Anders. It hits me even harder when I think back to the book. How can I have such a strong pull to Mikael, and yet he can so easily fight it? Maybe I’m not his scent match, but he’s mine. I shake all the negative thinking out of my head, not wanting Mikael to have to stand there and wait for me much longer.
When I leave the bathroom, he watches as I take my seat on the stands before he’s back on the rink with the team. I can feel Anders and Eli glancing over at me. The game is not as exciting as it was earlier, but I watch dutifully, even though it feels like my heart is breaking. I have two Alphas who are really giving this a shot. They are the ones I should be giving my attention to.
A pretty Beta with dark brown hair wearing a BU sweatshirt sits next to me. “Mikael Martel, really?” she asks.
“Pardon?”
“Might as well cut your losses there, sweetheart. Mikael is the kind of guy you fuck. He’s not looking to settle down. I’m sure there are plenty of other Alphas who would be interested.”
I eye her up and down, no idea how my face looks. Pretty sure that I can’t control the irritation I’m feeling. “And who are you?”
“Harley, and you are?”
“Mikael’s scent match, if you’ll excuse me.” She gapes at me for a moment and doesn’t let me pass.
“You’re setting yourself up for failure. A guy like that doesn’t stay faithful once he’s pro.” I ignore her and grab my coat to go stand toward the ice. My gaze meets Mikael’s, and the look he gives Harley is one that I’m glad I haven’t been on the other side of.
My phone buzzes, and Piper’s name pops up. I sigh and rub my forehead. Today has been a lot. I know immediately that we need a coffee date. If anyone can help me with this problem, it’s going to be Piper.
Chapter fifteen
Ididn’tspendthenight at the guys’ cabin last night. Something about my interaction with Mikael just has me feeling off. The feminist part of me is screaming fuck yeah, I don’t belong to anyone. The Omega part, however, is screeching that I belong to them and why in the fuck haven’t they claimed me as theirs?
It seemed like they needed time to practice and do hockey things anyway. Mom dropped me off at the coffee shop; she has bingo at the VFW and it was on her way. Piper is meeting me, and I’m freaking out about how she’s going to take the news. I’ve already preemptively gotten both of our coffees and commandeered our favorite table by the window.
When she walks through the door looking like a goddess, I give her a smile, and she unwraps her scarf as she comes and sits next to me.
“What’s going on, Charles?” She arches an eyebrow, and I know I’m caught. Usually when I’m home from break, Piper and I spend every waking moment together.
“Here, I got you coffee.”
“Hmm, buttering me up, are we?”
I take a sip off my coffee and sigh. “So maybe there’s a little thing I haven’t told you?”
“What?” She’s sharp with the question, and I clear my throat.
“Ifoundmyscentmatchesandtherearethreeofthem,” spews out of me like one giant word.
