“She’s back at the house waiting for you. I can portal you there while Kas and I try to find Asmo.”

Stevie nods her head and attempts to get up off of Kas’ lap, who eagerly pushes her back down. “We’ll all stick together.”

“Whatever,” I reply as Stevie tells Kas where she needs to portal to. With two quick pops, we are right back in front of Blair’s house.

Stevie and I both walk through the front door and as soon as Kas attempts to walk past the threshold, she’s held back by Blair’s wards.

“Sorry, Kas, Blair is so much better at wards than I am. She will have to give you access.”

“Or not,” I say, walking up the stairs to find Blair. Her snake is coiled around her wrist. She hasn’t changed from her outfit to the club as she lies on her side, facing away from the door.

“Babe,” I say, going to sit next to her. Fez gives me a shitty look, well, a shitty look by snake standards.

“Dax, I don’t think I’m completely a witch.”

I sigh and nod my head. As soon as the smoke came out of her hands, I knew she wasn’t fully a witch. “I know, but you’re still my little witch.”

She rolls her eyes and scoffs. The snake sticking his tongue out and licking her forearm.

“What do you know about your dad?” I ask.

“Not much. He usually just lets me talk when he visits me for my birthday.”

“When’s your birthday?”

“Friday,” she replies.

“Your birthday is in a week and you didn’t tell me?” She shrugs, cradling her head further into her pillow. “Are you supposed to meet your dad?”

“Yeah, on the dot, every birthday. He never misses it. He always gives me money, takes me out to eat and gives me the longest hug at the end of the night.”

“Maybe your mom knows something?”

“Seeing as she tried to sacrifice me and she’s gone into hiding, I’m not sure how I’m supposed to ask her.”

“Kas and I need to find Asmo, and after that’s done, I think we need to track down your mom. Mara seems more powerful and calculated than I thought. Maybe if we know more about why she wants to use you as a vessel, the easier it will be to take her down.”

She nods her head, and I lean over and kiss her temple. Fez doesn’t like that at all, but I ignore the moody fuck. “Oh, do you want Kas to have access to your house?”

“No,” she replies, and I smile.

“Get some sleep. I’ll be back as soon as I find Asmo. Maybe change into some comfier clothes?”

She nods her head, and I put the blanket on top of her, in case she decides she doesn’t want to get up. I spin on my heel, leaving her house with a pit of worry festering in my stomach.

Chapter 22

Aslightsqueezearoundmy wrist wakes me up and I look down to see Fez wrapped around my arm. I thought maybe Dax would have come back at some point in the night, but the other half of my bed lay cold and empty.

Last night was—I really don’t know how to put into words how last night felt. On the one hand, I felt completely sexually liberated, had the best orgasms of my life, and I’m in the middle of what’s clearly a sexual awakening. The second half terrifies me. After Mara—Paige—whoever the fuck grabbed Stevie, it’s like I blacked out. Like something dark was seeping out of me and I had no control of it, like I wasn’t the one driving the wheel. One might compare it to being possessed. That train of thought has me freaking the Hell out.

I’ve always been a witch. It’s who I am, what I am. But now… now, I’m not so sure. Maybe I’m something else too, and that’s why I never fit in. Why my coven never truly accepted me and why I’ve never felt like I belonged. Maybe I belong with some other group of supernaturals.

The chances of my mom speaking to me, or me being able to find her, are low. But there’s someone who might be able to help. Stevie isn’t going to like it.

When I walk downstairs, I hear crying from the basement, and I roll my eyes. Who knew keeping a human alive was so much fucking work? Honestly, it’s not surprising so many kidnappers kill their victims. If Clover didn’t have an eviction date for after the full moon, I might just strangle her.

Against my own volition, I make her a cup of noodles, grab some crackers and a bottle of water, and carry them downstairs. I had to take the silencing charm off the room because we kept forgetting to feed her when we couldn’t hear her.
