“Oh, Asmo doesn’t mind.”
“Yeah, well, I fucking mind,” Dax replies and my inky black heart grows two sizes larger.
With no care in the world, I stand next to Dax and interlace our fingers together. He smiles down at me before he faces the woman next to me.
“Oh, new pet?” The woman named Kas asks, and my heart deflates back to its standard size. I don’t let the irritation show on my face. Not the way she’s talking to me, or the idea that I’m one of many Dax has filled this role for. If he was being honest then at least I’m the first to call him daddy, so there’s that.
“Oh, are you the old pet?” I ask her in a sharp voice. She gives me a smile so sinister from that alone I know she’s supernatural.
She tsks her tongue before she looks me up and down. I’ve been sized up by plenty of women, and if I’m not mistaken, it’s an appraisal of intrigue.
“You must be the mean witch Asmo keeps going on about. I can see the appeal, Daxaddon.”
Dax groans next to me and his hand tightens around mine. Kas is clearly testing his patience.
“Asmo has quite the mouth on him,” I say. It’s glaringly obvious she’s a demon if she knows Dax’s full name and hangs out with Asmo as well. I know I need to have my guard up with her. But something about her attitude resonates with me. Something inside of me tells me to make this woman my friend instead of my enemy.
“You have no idea. You look like you have quite the mouth on you too, little witch.” I don’t particularly like Dax’s pet name coming from her lips. Dax seems to have similar feelings.
“What do you want, Kas?” Dax asks her, clearly exacerbated by her circling around the conversation.
“Just making sure that everything is going to go as planned for tomorrow night.”
“Everything will be fine.”
“We can’t afford to fuck this up,” she says.
“You have no idea. Can you leave us alone?”
Kas ignores him and faces me. “What are you wearing tomorrow?” she asks.
“Uh, probably a skirt, a crop top, or a bra.”
Kas taps her chin. “Meet me at Luxe in North Grove in an hour.”
“What?”
“If you’re coming to Inferno with us, you need to look the part. I’m going to make sure you two don’t ruin this by not being prepared.”
Dax opens his mouth to answer her, and I step in front of him. “I’ll meet you there in an hour.”
Kas gives me another evil grin, and I swear I can hear Dax basically growl next to me. “See you there.”
She spins on her heel, exiting the shop without another word.
“I don’t think this is a good idea,” Dax says next to me.
“It will be fine,” I say, squeezing his hand reassuringly.
Dax drives me to Luxe on the back of his motorcycle. He’s fussing about me meeting with Kas as he takes off my helmet for me and puts it on the bike. He takes extra care in flattening out my skirt, too.
“You really don’t have to do this,” he says.
“Which part?”
“Shopping with Kas. I like the clothes you wear.”
“Kas seemsokay, and I want to be prepared tomorrow.”
