Kelsey turns and glares at me. “What the fuck did you do?”
I raise my arms in surrender. “I think there are things you just shouldn’t tell your sister, and I think this falls into one of those things.”
“Did you sleep with her?” she hisses and raises an eyebrow.
I scratch my beard with no way to explain to my sister what happened. “Let’s just say some things happened that didn’t involve touching and now things are awkward.”
“Why are you torturing yourself?”
“Do you really think a woman—an Omega like that would settle down with just me, Kelsey?”
“Why not?”
I glare at her.
“You’re infuriating, she’s not Hannah,” Kelsey growls at me.
“You’re right, I was with Hannah for five years and she still left me for another pack at the first opportunity. Cami has only known me for a little over a month. She has no obligation to me.”
“Uh, big brother, you’re really epically fucking this up.”
“No, I’m just trying to prevent myself from what happened before,” I reply.
“It happened a decade ago!” she says, loudly. I look behind her and see that Cami is still in her room.
“You, of all people, should get where I’m coming from.” As soon as I say it, I feel like a dick.
“No, that’s the difference between you and me. Meera hurt me, but I won’t hold on to that forever. I want to be happy with a pack.”
“It’s easier for you, Kelsey. You’re an Omega, your choices are endless. I’m a selfish, jaded prick. Even if I made a move, I would never be enough for her during her heats.”
“I think if you love someone enough, there are things you are willing to do that you usually wouldn’t.”
“I loved Hannah, and I thought she loved me, too.”
“Hannah was a fucking cunt, okay? Mom always used to say what a little bitch she was when you weren’t around. It had nothing to do with you. She wanted the richest, cushiest pack she could find, and you were a stepping stone to get to what she wanted. I don’t even know if she really knew what love was.”
I rear back from her words and blink at her. “Mom really called her a bitch?”
“Yeah, she would never tell you she hated Hannah, but she did. You didn’t see it, just like I didn’t with Meera.”
A groan escapes me, and I rub the back of my neck. “I just can’t try to be a part of a pack again,” I say.
“Do you even know if she wants a pack? Have you thought about asking her what she wants?”
“All Omegas want a pack.”
My sister rolls her eyes and shoves my arm. “You’re really such a dumbass.”
That’s the moment Cami comes out of her bedroom. She looks a little perturbed with her brows furrowed.
“Everything okay?”
She looks up at me and I can see the irritation written all over her face. “Garth is trying to put together this press tour. I told him it’s too close to my heat and I’ll call him in a few weeks.”
I smile widely, proud of her for sticking up for herself.
“Good girl,” I reply without thinking or remembering that my sister is standing right there.
