“It’s not rabbit food, Smith. It’s healthy.”

“Whatever, you’re annoying.”

It’s like a splash of cold water on the day. Why does him calling me that bother me so much? I slowly cave in on myself, and Smith must notice me drifting away as we get into the car and I stare out the window.

“What’s wrong?” he asks me.

“Nothing, just tired.”

He grunts but doesn’t push it any further. I know he was just joking, but he wasn’t joking the first time he said that. Does he still think that I’m an annoying Omega? Does he still feel like I can’t take care of myself? He had to step in with Memphis, and he always hovers when I take my medicine. The last thing I want is to seem like a burden to anyone.

My phone chimes, taking me out of the moment. As soon as I see the name, I smile.

“Hey, Mama.”

“Hey, honey. I miss you,” my mom says.

“I miss you too, only two more weeks until I see you.”

“Speaking about your visit, honey.” I swallow and play with the button on my power suit jacket.

“Yeah?”

“I don’t have enough room for you and your new bodyguard. I spoke to Theresa next door, and she said y’all could use her pool house while you’re here.”

“I dunno. I think Smith will want to check it out when we get there. He’s kinda a freak about safety.” I look at the man in question, and he rolls his eyes.

“Well, that’s a good thing, y’all getting along better?

“Yeah,” I reply.

“Is he right next to you?”

“Yeah.”

“We’ll talk more soon then. I can’t wait to see you soon.”

“Me either, Mama.”

“Have a great show, and make sure you’re taking care of my girl.”

“Love you.”

“Love you too.”

I hang up the phone and smile. Glancing over at Smith, he has a smirk on his face.

“Freak about safety, huh?”

“Yeah, my mom doesn’t have enough room for us at the house. Her neighbor offered her pool house. We can just get a hotel if you want.”

“We can check it out. How long do you want to stay in Georgia?”

“At least a few days,” I tell him.

“However long you need, little star.” He looks away after he calls me the nickname. Has this man been fucking body snatched?

Chicago and Detroit were exhausting, but some of the best performances I’ve had so far. Garth has been keeping his distance, and it’s been nice to not have him breathing down my neck.
