I shook my head, forcing myself to look at what I’d done to the alpha. Even though his pack had tried to kill us, they dragged Caspian away, and he kicked me so hard I couldn’t straighten up, he was still Caspian’s father.
I was close to falling to my knees again. I wanted to do something to say sorry, to make it right. Because I didn’t want to be that kind of person.
But Kai hugged me from behind, plopping his chin on my shoulder, grinning at me.
“Let’s try this one again,” Kai hummed as he looked down at the alpha. “Do you want to find out where Caspian is, or should I?” I gasped as he slipped a warm hairpin into my hand.
“Kai, I can’t…”
“We need information. And these three cunts are the best place to get it.”
“As much as I would like to see Melanie take care of this situation, she is not in the best state to make these decisions,” Sin said as he surged forward.
All the darkness I’d seen in him had disappeared, and the man who met us with a concerned look felt much more real. I was too wound up to ask anything about that look as he crushed his father-in-law’s chest meant.
He pulled Kai close, kissing him on the forehead as he casually moved the hairpin from my hand back to his omega’s. “Go do what you do best,” he said to Kai, and I loved that I could feel Kai’s pleasure at his alpha’s attention.
“What’s happening?” I asked shakily as Kai left and Sin moved me away.
He tucked himself in behind me, moulding his body to mine like he’d done so many times already.
“Just focus on my voice,” Sin said as he placed a gloved hand over my eyes. “We’re going to find Caspian. Even though you can’t sense him now, he hasn’t gone.” He walked us forward, and I trusted him to guide me. I knew the doors they’d pulled Caspian through were straight ahead, so I walked with him.
As soon as he said Caspian’s name, my omega instincts flared to life, and the panic that took over me when he left suddenly reared up again. But Sin doused me in his aura, his scent curling through my nostrils and sending me deeper into the haze.
Until a scream ripped from behind me, and I stopped dead. The colour drained from my face as Kai’s laugh bounced aroundthe room, and there was a loud squelch before silence followed it.
“You just need to listen to me, Melanie,” Sin said, one hand covering my ear as his lips rode the other, drowning out the sounds of Kai and the others yelling. “Caspian is still alive. You would know if he had died; we all would. We’ve only been here for five minutes, so he can’t have gone far. Just breathe. Our mate will come back to us soon.”
“Sin,” I croaked, my steps growing slower. “I can’t just let Kai do this.”
“Don’t worry,” he said, rubbing his nose against my neck, scent marking me to calm me down. “Kai can be fast when he wants to be. The problem is when he takes his time.”
“But what if—”
“Melanie,” his voice shivered over me as the purr he used the last time we made love came through. “It’s like Kai said. We haven’t cared for you like you deserve. So, let us protect you now.” He brought us to a stop, groaning as he nuzzled his nose against my cheek. “When I bite you and the four of us finally bond, you’ll never have to worry again.”
I whimpered as his teeth grazed my jaw, and I softened into him.
My stomach thudded with pain with each step I took. But everything that had happened was forgotten as I was surrounded by my alpha. I was so weak and scattered from Caspian’s bite, and I still had no control over myself as an omega, but Sin was too good. I didn’t want to think about what I’d just done, so I sighed back into him.
I was ready to relax, ready to let my alpha take care of finding Caspian and bringing us all together before he bit me, but footsteps suddenly filled my ears and Sin removed his hand. We were standing directly in front of the door they had dragged Caspian through, and Kai burst into my view.
“Phew, I’ve been dreaming about that foryears. I know they are Cas’s dads, but they seriously had some meat on them. I haven’t had to push that hard to get to a windpipe since—”
My eyes widened as he appeared in front of me. Thin red lines crisscrossed his white suit, his sleeves dyed brightly as blood dripped from the needle.
He wiped it off on his suit, quickly putting his hair back up as I reached out for him.
“Kai…” I reached for him even though I was freaking out at the sheer amount of blood that splattered him. “Did you kill them?” And did he do that for me?
“What? No! Don’t be crazy! I just dug my needle into his throat a bit and wiggled it around until he told me what I wanted. It’s not like it’s my fault if he bleeds out.” He shrugged as if it was a normal thing to do, while my arms ached over what I’d done with the chair.
Kai took my hand before I could touch his bloody cheek, kissing the back, holding my gaze with a mischievous grin. “It’s all for my omega,” he said, and his pride flowed into me.
At the last party, I was so wrapped up in perfuming that I couldn’t really come to terms with how Kai and Caspian had reacted to the Hiscoxes. I’d been so focused on Sin and then Kai that it was only when I was safe in my nest that I fully realised they had stabbed and beaten them in front of me.
“We should leave before Zania sends people to check on us,” Sin said, cupping his mate’s cheek, wiping the blood from Kai’s face with one white glove, staining himself just as badly as him.
