Seri grunted in response. Gaze traveling past the Dweller, he frowned at what he saw. “Is that…”
The shadowy figures, who were now not so blobbish, but defined by shades of blue, were carrying what looked like a version of himself, as well as Skya, out of the wreck.
The man turned around. “Ah, I put our shadows in our places. The fakes will…remain for a maximum of fifteen to twenty minutes, since we aren’t connected to them in any way. But we should go. We need to put some distance between them and us, and I need to call my boss.”
He turned to Severo. “Go where?”
“We are going ghost.”
“W-what?”
“We are going into hiding.”
“For how long? No, wait. What is this ‘we’?”
“You, Skya, and I, are going into hiding.”
Seri blinked. “Why…why would you come?”
“Because I can protect you.”
“Why would you want to do that?” he asked, genuinely confused.
“Because it’s the right thing to do. And because if we hadn’t tracked you down and dragged you back, you wouldn’t be at risk right now. To add on, someone from our side must have leaked the information.”
“I would be at risk regardless. Preston’s trying to use the law to drag me back to him. I’m sure it was just one of the options. So there's no need to go off the deep end and disrupt your life by trying to play savior. I can set off on my own.”
“Oh, for the love of…” Severo trailed off on a huff, taking a deep breath before saying, “Seri, I’m going with you. I’m going to get you to safety, and we are going to hide until my boss figures out what the fuck he’s going to do about all this.”
Seri hissed. “I’m going to smack you the next time you swear in front of Skya.”
Severo tossed his free hand up in the air. “You are impossible… Just take my help. I have resources, and people.”
“People that leaked things.”
“Not those people, different people. Though my boss is good people, and will be helping us figure this all out.”
“Mmhmm…”
“Just come on!” Severo huffed, stomping forward down the road.
Seri watched him walk away with the baby seat for a moment before sighing and following after him.
When his phone began to ring, Cyrus pressed the flat earpiece in his ear to answer, frowning when the ringing continued. That’s when he realized it wasn’t his normal phone ringing. Cyrus pulled the small circular earpiece out and turned it off, before grabbing the small square box hanging from a chain around his neck. He pressed his index finger to the front of it. Once it read his print, the small square unfolded into a full-sized cell phone.
Cyrus held it up to his right ear and rumbled, “The threads are always spinning.”
“The threads may be spinning, but someone has still managed to catch a ride on them,” Severo growled. “And with each ride, others are disrupted. Destruction and death block our way, so the path has to be changed. A new destination has to be picked, but unknown to all. I’ll reach out again once these…butts have shaken off.”
Cyrus' jaw clenched together harder with each word, but his brow rose at the word ‘butt’. “Wait,” he said, but the line went dead.
Catch a ride… Someone had been listening. Destruction and death… They’d been attacked. A new path, but an unknown destination… Severo was taking the Nymph and going into hiding.
The Dweller talking like that instead of using numbers probably meant it wasn’t likely anyone could hear Severo. The dumbass had no doubt just used code words because he found it fun. But him calling this phone did mean...someone had—and still could—hear Cyrus.
Shit! Cyrus released the phone, letting it drop down on the chain. The device collapsed in on itself, returning to the small decorative box it had been before.
He eyed the room. There was a bug somewhere…possibly multiple, and maybe in his normal phone. Or Killian’s… Only Cyrus and Killian knew Severo was coming back, and coming back here. But he couldn’t be completely sure exactly what had been leaked, until Severo told him the full details.
