Like the last one they’d been at, it was surrounded by woods, so they had to park a distance away, as there was no way to drive closer without being spotted. Not that it mattered. Which he had pointed out to Harlow, but the man said it’s better to not be rushing out of the car as the fuckers try to run off. Foxx supposed the human had a point, as he definitely didn’t want to run after these assholes in the snow.
When the house came into view, Foxx had to say it looked pretty much the same as in the photos they were given. It was normal; two floors, with nothing really special about it. Therewere, however, some annoying Christmas lights hanging all around the outside of the house. He eyed the plastic Santa in his sleigh…his reindeer.
Would Harlow give him a chance to kick a few things over? Probably not.
“Six heartbeats, all human, all upstairs and moving. I’d say they are in there.”
“Good. Let’s get in and get out.” Harlow pulled out one of his guns.
Foxx hadn’t even bothered to bring his, so he pulled out nothing.
The human whispered, “Want to kick the door down?”
“You can do it. Oh, but can I do that thing about them having a right to surrender?”
“Sure. But take your face mask off as you sound a bit muffled.”
Foxx sighed and pulled off his warm, fuzzy new ski mask and tucked it into his coat.
Harlow nodded and kicked the door in. The humans inside rushed down the stairs at the noise.
The men looked stoic as they came down, their panic only noticeable through their racing hearts.
“Who are you?” a man with red hair and freckles on his face asked, gaze flicking to Harlow’s gun. Based on the pictures he’d seen, this was Cain Dole. While the rest were in their late thirties, this man was actually the youngest, by at least five years. “You are trespassing.”
Foxx cleared his throat. A bright smile slipped onto his face as he announced, “Hunters here. You dumbasses are all under arrest. Surrender now and we won’t have to hurt you.” His smile turned sadistic. “Or don’t surrender, and we’ll use you as a punching bag. Though, it’s your lucky day. I don’t have time to play tonight. So, I’ll probably just knock you out. Got places to be and things to do.”
Harlow chuckled. “You knocked those fake hunters out on that one case without having plans. What even makes you think you’d be able to hold back enough to not?”
Foxx glared. “It wasn’t on purpose!”
“Exactly.”
He huffed at him, and he was about to say something back when a cuckoo clock on the wall went off, the small bird announcing it was 2am.
“We don’t have time for this. It’s going to take us thirty minutes to drive back, and then who knows how long to get you all processed. My fun baking night is like almost a forty-five-minute drive from the station! So what will it be, humans? Surrender or get punched?” Foxx punched the air.
He hoped Harlow knew he was going to make him drop Foxx off at Sephira’s. Not to mention, pick him up later. It was part of his plan to help Harlow make new friends.
The fake hunters stared silently before looking at each other, and then the one who had spoken before said, “We surrender.”
“Very well then, prepare—” He blinked, stopping the minute his brain made sense of the words. “You surrender? Really?” Foxx asked, confused.
Harlow grunted. “Well, that’s a first…”
“We are unarmed, there is no way we can fight back,” Cain replied.
“Right….” Harlow drawled, the human was eyeing the men suspiciously. “Know that if you are planning on trying something, I will shoot you.”
“Well…umm. You zip tie, I’m going to run out and move the SUV closer!”
His partner laughed. “You volunteering to go out in the cold, Foxx? Am I dreaming?”
He stuck his tongue out and started walking backwards saying, “Not a dream. I just know I’ll get there and back faster than you, old man.”
“Brat,” he heard Harlow grumble as Foxx spun around and took off towards the SUV. He didn’t even take the time to put his mask on.
Baking, baking. He was going to have a fun time, yes! Foxx practically skipped forward in the snow. Even the cold couldn’t bring down his mood. What could…was the heartbeat that suddenly appeared in front of him out of nowhere.
