“Fine!” Foxx huffed as he grabbed the stupid bag.
Opening the thing, he began to leave a trail as he shuffled forward through the snow, going around the whole outside of the property. As he walked, he continued to listen. One of the heartbeats was moving, but the other eight still remained where they were. Something was off about them, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was.
He made it back to Harlow without coming across a single other footstep besides his own.
He shoved the empty bag at Harlow when he reached him. “There, it’s done. And I didn’t find any tracks.”
Harlow frowned. “So either they are still there and just older, or they left days ago.”
“I mean, they could have just been covered up. It has been snowing.”
The human shook his head. “Not hard enough to cover anything. Do you want to go in with a plan or just burst in?”
“Fuck planning. Let’s just get this fucking thing over with, I’m freezing my ass off.”
“Wouldn’t want that to happen.” Harlow let out a low chuckle. “Come on,” the human said as he started forward.
Harlow followed behind Foxx, gun drawn. The vampire could hear a hell of a lot better than him, so there was no point in him taking the lead.
“Front?” Foxx asked.
“Might as well.”
“Loud?”
“Why not.”
They moved as swiftly as they could through the thick snow to the front of the house. Thankfully the steps up to the covered deck were clean of snow.
On reaching the door, Foxx, for some reason, dug into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
“What are you…” he trailed off.
Harlow’s eyes widened when the songPlay With Firestarted to blare loudly from Foxx’s phone—a song he only knew because the vampire randomly played it at home… Usually when he was about to do something to fuck with him. Harlow had heard that song way too many times.
Foxx cleared his throat before screaming, “HEY, YOU MOTHERFUCKERS! WE’VE COME TO OFF YOUR ASSES!” With his foot, Foxx kicked the door off its hinges, sending it flying into the house.
Harlow stood there, eye twitching as he watched Foxx bounce to the song for a few more moments before silencing his phone and putting it away.
“What the fuck was that?!”
“Well…you said be loud!”
Harlow rubbed his face. “Did it do anything?”
Foxx’s head tilted. “To be honest, the heartbeats are a little bit weird…”
“Weird, how?”
“Only one is moving.”
Harlow frowned. “Do you think they are dormant?”
“No, if they were, their hearts would be beating so slow it would almost be nonexistent. These just sound like normal vampire heartbeats…yet, oddly still. Besides, I’d think if eight of the vampires were in deep sleep, the police or the investigators would have noticed, wouldn’t you? Also, I imagine them running around murdering people didn’t happen months ago. They had to have a trail to follow.”
“The killings took place this month.”
“That’s not enough time for a vampire to go dormant.”
