“Attack!” the man roared.
Foxx cursed as the humans pulled out guns and started to fire. Oddly enough, flaming arrows started to rain down too. What the fuck was this, the fifteen hundreds?
He fell back with Harlow, ignoring as a bullet slammed into his left arm. It hurt like a son of a bitch, but he’d live.
Harlow yanked him back further, and he helped the man topple over a hallway bookcase so they could use it as a shield. He was almost shocked it didn’t break when they pulled it over, even as its contents spilled out.
With the rather sturdy piece of wood in place, Harlow started to fire back. The humans who were attacking were using various doors and furniture to hide behind.
Foxx hummed. “I guess he didn’t like being called a moron.”
“Yah think?” Harlow chuckled. He popped up and fired off five shots. He heard five shouts of pain, and the smell of fresh human blood filled the air. The man was a good shot. “Are they really shooting fucking arrows at us…flaming arrows? Also, I still can’t hear them…”
“Yeah, the fire and arrows are real. As for the sound…I’m guessing the illusion is still in place. So, it’s best to keep your eyes open and not trust your ears. I’ll let you know if any heartbeats are coming from above. So, what’s the protocol here?”
“Don’t die.”
“Good protocol.” Foxx lifted up his arm and glanced at the bullet embedded into the underside. “Well, they aren’t filled with holy water, so I’m going to attack. Don’t shoot me, please.”
Harlow eyed his wound. “You need to dodge better, brat.”
“Yeah, yeah. Don’t die either, old man.”
He jumped out, ignoring the firing going on around him, and sped towards the closest vampire. The fuckers had fallen back behind the humans. Nice of them to let the fodder take the brunt.
He grinned as he attacked the one who happened to have broken through the floor. Grabbing him by the throat, he pinned him to the ground, claws growing as he did. Foxx didn’t hesitate to rip his throat out. Wide, shocked-filled eyes stared back at him, blood gurgling in his mouth. They remained shocked as he sliced his claws right through his neck, severing his head. The minute he did, the sound returned, as the illusion fell away.
Foxx had moved fast enough that the other two vampires hadn’t had time to reach their companion before it was too late. As they dove for him, he was already jumping away with the vampire’s head in his hand.
“Oh, too late.” Foxx laughed. “Hey, humans. Catch!” He tossed the vampire's head back behind him, into the crowd of humans who were in a fire off with Harlow. None of them had noticed he'd passed them. Then again, he hadn’t wanted them to.
The screams of anger and horror that came with the landing of the head had Foxx laughing harder.
He turned to face the human cultists who stupidly turned towards him, some even stepped out from behind the barriers they’d been using as cover. He was not worried about the vampires at his back. They were even younger than the one he’d killed, barely a hundred years old. They knew they were no match. That didn’t mean they wouldn’t be stupid enough to try anything, but he wasn’t worried they’d be able to hurt him.
Even with their hoods up, he could see the anger in the human’s eyes. They really saw these vampires as…beings to worship. What a joke. “Oh sorry, was that your God?”
He heard Harlow snort, and then the man started shooting again, reminding the humans that he was not their only issue. Really, they shouldn’t have had to remember. Quite a few of them were down and bleeding already. Not dead, but not good.
The cultists up above must have felt the older of the vampires they sent die, as more heartbeats shifted above. He pressed the button on his earpiece and spoke, “More coming, Harlow! Ten humans, five vampires!”
“Got it,” Harlow replied.
“They’re here,” Foxx screamed out, just as he finished taking out the last of the two other vampires.
Another ten humans and five vampires, all dressed in their ridiculous robes, jumped down from the hole in the ceiling… He was starting to wonder if perhaps the one stairway was blocked in some way. Because why risk a twisted ankle by stupidly dropping down? Well, it was a risk for the humans, unless the vampires happened to be clumsy on top of being blithering idiots.
Didn’t explain why they were too lazy to head over to the stairway on the other side of the hotel…but, whatever.
Harlow used the moment they dropped down to shoot a few people in the leg. The ten new humans brought the number back up to fifteen. As only five of the original fifteen humans were still standing. The rest were miraculously still alive, but on the ground bleeding. Thanks to the dumbasses shooting fire arrows…there were now small fires in the hallway, and it was quickly filling with smoke.
As the new crew awkwardly landed, they appeared to have more traditional street weapons—knives and bats. Foxx's eyes widened as they didn’t hesitate, the humans converged on Harlow while the vampires came for him.
The biggest tackled Foxx down and attempted to pin him, no doubt trying to give the others time to behead him. But the fools had given the job to a child who hadn’t even reached a hundred years yet. Hissing, Foxx shoved his hand through the man’s chest. Blood sprayed from the vampire’s mouth onto Foxx’s face, as he clutched hold of his heart and began to squeeze. “The problem with children trying to play Gods is that you fools forget how very weak you really are,” he ground out viciously before crushing the man’s heart in his hand.
Pushing the dead weight off him, he wiped his face and went after the next closest vampire. It was so obvious these vampires were untrained. Their hesitation at the sight of death screamed inexperience. Probably used to attacking those who couldn’t fight back.
As he pinned the next man by his throat to the wall, the remaining three jumped into action and attempted to attack him. But with a simple drop into his bloodline abilities, he mentally yanked a thread that had them dropping to their knees and gasping for air as he drained their life energy. Harlow was too distracted to notice what he was doing, so he figured he could get away with it.
