The silence hung heavy between us until she said with a shrug, "Yeah, well…so what?"
"So what?" I scoffed."That'syour defense?"
She gave me a look. "I didn't know it was a trial."
"AndIdidn't know you were this bad at lying."
"You do realize that's not exactly an insult, don't you?" Her chin lifted. "I mean…let's say Iambad at lying. Isn't that agoodthing?"
I moved closer to quietly say, "Not if you're lying to yourself, which you definitely are."
"And what makes you say that?"
"Because you wanted me to kiss you."
She gave a tight little laugh. "What?"
I grinned. "I bet you didn't even know it."
"Oh, andyoudo?"
"Hell yeah."
She gave another jerk of her chin. "Hah! Well maybeIknow somethingyoudon't."
"And what's that?"
"It wasn'tonlyme."
"Meaning?"
"Youwantedme to kiss you." She leaned in. "What do you have to say to that?"
On instinct, I moved forward just a fraction. "Well, I'm not gonna deny it, if that's what you think."
Her gaze dipped to my mouth before rising again. "Fine."
Under the full moon, her eyes were so bright it would've hurt to look away. I didn't even try. Instead, I said it, too. "Fine."
But Tessa was right.
Iwantedto kiss her.
Shewanted to kiss me.
The only question was, which one of us would give in first?
39
Again With the Nope?
Tessa
My thoughts swirled as I stared up at him.Fine?
Nothing about this was fine.I wasn't supposed to want him.
And yet here I was, holding my breath and waiting for him to lower his head and kiss me like it was the most natural thing in the world.
