That can’t be right. I drank coffee with Aiden… well, there was that other time…
She hesitates, then adds, more carefully, “I saw a flyer on the Community Board over there while I was waiting for you.” She gestures to the back wall, where businesses and events are plastered haphazardly on top of each other. “There’s a multi tribute band concert tonight at Ever After Farms. Something called Midnight Reflections: Sounds of the Seasons.”
I frown, then adjust because I’m not angry. Just confused. “Are you staying?”
“Well, word has it that there’s a fantastic Holly Everheart tribute playing tonight.”
She waits, letting the words land.
Holly is Phoebe’s favorite female artist. I know it’s not the same as taking her to a concert.
“I asked a few questions while I was waiting for my drink. You dress up in the style of a favorite chapter of her albums.” She flicks a wrist. “Or you can go as another favorite artist. Surely there’s a page for this event online somewhere.”
My mind sprints back to the recital in our living room, and how I was devastated to think I’d finally missed something I couldn’t get back.
It’s an easy lie, I think. “We’ll do it later,” or “once we have more money,” or more time.
“We’re going to the farm today, but for Midnight Magic, the three-day New Year’s festival. It sounded fun, anyway.”
“They really like the ‘midnight’ motif, don’t they?” Evie mutters under her breath. “Does Phoebe have things for friendship bracelets just in case? Worst case scenario, we’ll take it all home and come up with a fun plan.”
There’s zero pressure here. I didn’t know Evelyn even operated on zero pressure.
“I think she brought a little,” I say, still processing.
“Perfect excuse for me to go shopping then. It looks like there are a lot of cute shops here.” She stands, brushing off her sweater.
“Lots. There’s a cute kids' boutique, one block past the square, moving away from the lake. If it’s still there.”
“Thanks.” She smiles. “Your parents invited me to stay, so I guess I’ll see you back at the house?”
I nod. “When I’m done.”
My throat tightens. I didn’t know how much I needed that apology from Evelyn, or that her words actually had nothing to do with me.
Aiden
Did the coffee fix you?
Me
No. But I think it helped.
Are you playing Call of Duty?
He recruited me as soon as you walked out the door.
I laugh, then let out a deep sigh.
After only a second of hesitation, I glance out the set of windows behind me. Evelyn is still waiting for a Magic Carriage Ryde, the local rideshare around here.
Did you know your sister was here?
Evie?
No. She is?
I start to type:Do you mind… then delete every letter, one at a time. This is so unfamiliar to me.
