That catches his attention as he finally looks up. “A date?”
I bite my lip and nod, nervous about his reaction. When he confessed his attraction to the other omega to me, I was ecstatic, but I don’t think he’s picked up on how much I’ve fallen for her. I feel like it’s time to officially tell him.
“Yes, a date. I’d like to take her somewhere fun. Show her how I feel about her.”
Sam looks incredulous. “Howdoyou feel about her?”
“I like her, Sam. I want to pursue her.”
That surprises him. He completely sets down the paper he was focused on and watches me. “You never told me that you had feelings for her.”
“It is impossible not to have feelings for her,” I murmur.
He nods, like he agrees with that. “How long have you been feeling this way?”
“Fuck, Sam, that’s—” I let out a low breath. “It wasn’t romantic yet, but my instincts have been pointing me to her since we met. At the hockey game in Connecticut.”
His eyes widen in disbelief. “What?”
“I know,” I say. “I should have told you.”
“I mean, not necessarily, but that’s way longer than I thought.”
Guilt settles in now. I’ve been so preoccupied with spending time with Opal and discussing this pull I feel to her, that I forgot to let him in. Not to mention, I didn’t want to force him to feel the same. I know he does, but I need him to figure out his feelings for the omega on his own. The only problem is, I can’t hide my own feelings for her anymore. I want them to be out in the open.
“Is it…okaythat I feel this way?” I ask.
He takes his time, thinking it over as he fidgetswith his shirt sleeve. His scent is still bright and bubbly, no indication that there is any anguish or turmoil hiding underneath, which calms my nerves slightly.
“Yeah,” he finally says. “I’m not jealous or angry like I thought I’d be. I’m actually kind ofhappyfor you two. I like the idea.”
If the omega in my chest could purr, he would be cranking like a mower. “Really?”
His sexy smile pokes through. “Yes, really.”
I get out of my chair and run to him. He sees me coming and catches me as I jump on him and wrap my legs around his body. “This is exciting. I think I’m going to take her laser tagging.”
Sam chuckles deeply. “You two with laser guns? Those other participants better watch out.”
I cling on, rubbing my cheek against his neck as a piece of something clicks into place inside my chest. It’s the first step to making this image of my pack a reality, and I can’t fucking wait for it to come to fruition.
TWENTY-FIVE
Atlas: Are you coming to tutoring today?
Sam: I don’t think so. My boss has me working at the courthouse today. Can you hold it down for me?
Atlas: Of course.
Atlas: But is everything okay? You’ve missed the last few tutoring sessions and I know you want to be here.
Sam: I know. My boss doubled my caseload so I’ve just been busy. I’m sorry. I promise I’ll be there next week.
Atlas: Your boss sounds like a dick.
Sam: You have no idea.
The usual fast-paced nature of law is fascinating to me. I walk into the courthouse to meet my boss, prepared to sit and watch arraignments for the day. More interns scurry about, handing off coffees and folders and hurrying to their hearingslike busy bees. I usually don’t feel the same haste that others in my profession do. Everything normally feels unruffled, no sense of urgency to push me forward. But today, I’m uneasy. I want nothing more than to observe and acquaint myself with the realistic comings and goings of everyday law, but my boss has become unpredictable.
