I grinned down at Burkeley as he painted my exposed baby bump a deep brown for our costumes. Today was the Halloween party and I still couldn’t believe I had let this crazy ass man talk me into becoming a real life piece of candy.

“You’re enjoying this a little bit too much with this paint, BK,” I said as I watched him deep in concentration, now adding extra details that didn’t exist on a normal M&M.

With a sexy ass, lazy grin, Burkeley glanced up at me.

“What? Me down on my knees serving my woman and making her a physical piece of candy that melts like chocolate in my damn mouth, hell yeah, loving all of this. If only my hands weren’t busy doing arts and crafts, I could?—"

“Easy BK, ’member the baby can hear you. I’ma take those books out of the bathroom if you’re only going to read them and not put them to use once you leave the room,” I joked. Burkeley scoffed as he put the finishing touches on his name on my M&M. I found it sexy as hell that he had an interest in learning about not only the changes my body was going through butbaby names. He went behind me and either starred the names I highlighted or picked ones he liked.

“She doesn’t know what I’m talking about.”

“But I do.” He smirked as he stood up straight and I took my time appreciating my man in his matching costume. He had on a manager button down with his name asDaddyalong with his titles of professional M&M handler and taste tester. He looked good as hell, sly, cocky grin and all.

“Good because I hope you do. Now put that mask on and close your eyes while I spray this setting bullshit you got me using. You worried about me saying something that Peanut might hear, but you’re trying to have my baby inhaling fumes.” I hid my humor as I did as I was told. It was just regular make-up setting spray but Burkeley didn’t care.

“It has to last all night, baby,” I whined.

“No it doesn’t and that’s not my plan for it either. We’re giving these people two hours tops then I’m shutting shit down for you being out with no gotdamn clothes on.” After spraying a small amount, Burkeley bent down, blowing and waving his hands to dry it.

Once he was done, I stood back and put my hand on my hip, smiling widely, and said my line. I wasn’t naked but I did lack clothes in certain areas like my bump. I had on a brown crop top to match the paint and brown leggings.

“I have on clothes, BK. And if you have a problem with my outfit, then you shouldn’t have picked my costume. So, treat or sweet.” I turned my palm up, waiting for my candy.

“Sweets right now and treats later. We have to go.” When his lips met mine, I knew that was my sweet, making me kiss my teeth.

“Trick wasn’t listed in the options, BK. I wanted a piece of candy, not kisses.”

“Damn, now my kisses ain’t good enough, McKay? I would apologize but I couldn’t tell the difference. Your lips tasted pretty sweet to me.” He tossed a wink at me right before he left to get my jacket.

“Man,I swear that vote was rigged. Ain’t no way y’all beat me and Amber’s Adam and Eve costume. Do you see this stitch? My wife did that by hand; this ain’t no store-bought, factory-made stuff,” Art whined as we made our way out of the party. I couldn’t even argue with him because I was almost positive Burkeley and me only won because of the baby bump I had to forcefully stop people from touching the majority of the night.

“Nigga, you still crying about a trophy? Here.” Burkeley handed over the trophy in his hand, making Art scoff, pushing it back toward him. Amber and I chuckled at their going on.

“I don’t want that shit. I see yo’ ass didn’t offer that prize money up along with it though.”

“Fool, because why the fuck would I do that? Me and my lady won that money fair and square. Ain’t that right, M&M?” Burkeley said, further taunting Art.

Art waved him off as we reached the truck.

“Be nice, BK. In all fairness, Art, I did vote for y’all. I told Amber y’all got cheated because, girl by hand?! Ain’t no way,” I added as Burkeley pulled me closer to him, draping his arms around my shoulders.

“See! All the more reason for y’all to pass over the reward to the rightful winners.” That had both Amber and me busting out laughing because we could tell he was serious by his tone as he held his hand out.

“Not too much now. I didn’t say all that shit. That money is now part of Peanut’s bank account. You’re really trying to take money from your niece….or nephew?” I asked. I almost slipped up and revealed Peanut’s gender when I remembered we still hadn’t told anyone but Grandpa Mackie.

“Hell yeah, if it’s mine for real. Their daddy got big money. They don’t need my little fifteen hundred dollars.” Amber slapped his hand as she scolded him.

“Arthur David! Mickey, ignore my husband. Sometimes his mouth runs and never knows when to dry the fuck out. Please don’t hold it against me. I still want to hang out with you this week.” Amber jumped in, quickly apologizing.

We had just made plans to spend time together. I’d wanted to say no, because my mind was still on this thing with Burkeley and me still being fake, but I remembered we had made it official. Amber was persistent with us getting to know each other outside of these family gatherings, winning me over with the line of us becoming sisters, which made sense with us dating brothers.

“Oh she’s ignoring his ass,” Burkeley answered as he ushered me to the passenger side of the truck.

One final wave had Burkeley closing my door before I watched Amber chew Art’s ass out as they made it across the parking lot to their car. The whole scene had me snickering to myself, remembering I had just fussed Burkeley’s ass out about something the other day.

I snapped my fingers just as he pulled off.
