“I’ll see you guys soon,” she said, then let out a heavy sigh when she hung up the phone, letting it fall back to the carpet near her head. Kasey had raised up onto his elbows above her, his gray-blue gaze steady on her face as she turned back to look at him. His fingers were combing through the mess of curls surrounding her head, and she couldn’t stop the blush that stained her cheeks, because he was still buried inside her. Wiggling slightly beneath him, she stammered, “Well, this is awkward. Kasey, I need to get up.”

“Why did you run, Shaun?”

Groaning, she squeezed her eyes shut. “Kasey. Please let’s not do this right now.”

“I don’t think there’s a better time to do this, darlin’,” he murmured, and she hated how much she liked the feel of his chest rumbling against hers as he spoke, or the husky, intimate way his words touched her. “I want to know what I did to make you run away.”

“Nothing!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms wide and letting them fall to the carpet on either side of them. “Nothing, Kasey. You did nothing. I came home because Zoey was close to going into labor—”

“I told you to stop lying to me,” he growled, pinning her head between his hands and forcing her to look at him. Glaring up at him, her lips tightened into a hard line. “You ran. Plain and simple. Don’t try and spin it any other way.”

Pressing his hips between her legs, she gasped as she felt him fill her again.

“I didn’t know if you’d gotten into a wreck on the side of that damn mountain. I didn’t know if you’d been kidnapped by some creep. I had to walk up to that vacation rental and ask your parents where you’d disappeared to, because when I’d sent you off after breakfast, it was with the understanding that you were coming back to me.” Braced on his elbows on either side of her,he moved his hips, sliding in and out of her slowly, leisurely. Biting her lip, her eyelids fluttered closed for a heartbeat before he pressed his mouth to hers. Kissing her until she was breathless, he finally released her lips and whispered huskily, “Tothis, Shaun.”

TWENTY-EIGHT

Her face was clasped between his hands, his fingers spearing up into her curls as they lay spread out around her head in a riotous halo. It had been obvious as soon as she’d opened the door that she had just woken up, her face was clean of all make-up… and she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen, spread out beneath him, taking everything he was giving her.

He’d wanted to throttle her when Serenity had told him she’d high-tailed it back to Michigan, hours prior. At the time, he’d thought he was giving her the time that she needed to gather her things, give an explanation of where she was going… Little did he know he was giving her ample time torun.

Trepidation had risen in his chest when Levi had walked into the great room, impaling him with that intense blue stare he shared with his middle daughter. But the elder gentleman had just nodded his head, to which Kasey had taken as grudging acceptance.

It was better than a black eye, he’d reminded himself, remembering the shiner Levi had given to Freeman when the man had found out his best friend had intentions with his oldest daughter.

He’d packed his bag and had been on the next flight to Michigan. He was only hours behind her. His anger had fueled him.

Now, as he watched her beneath him, that anger faded, replaced with such intense longing it burned in his chest, making it tight. Her lips, full and plump and well kissed, were parted slightly, her head inching back, the thin column of her throat arching, those soft, breathy moans falling from her lips driving him damn near crazy. His dick got harder, somehow, and he clenched his jaw against the intense pleasure spearing through him.

“You’re mine,” he breathed raggedly, tilting her face forward again. “Shaun.”

She shook her head, keeping her eyes closed. Her fingers moved against his ribs, curling into fists in the fabric of his shirt. Her hips moved with his, maintaining the tempo he set; slow, deep, unhurried.

“Shaun,” he growled through clenched teeth. “Look at me.”

Again, she shook her head where it was clasped between his palms. “No,” she panted.

“Then say it.”

“No,” cried, arching her back as he drove in, harder than before.

“You stubborn woman,” he groaned. “You can either look at me while I fuck you, or you can say the words we both know are true. Your choice, darlin’.”

After what felt like a lifetime, those deep sapphire blue eyes of hers opened and met his, and he was gone. Even if she refused to say the words, he knew it was true. She knew it was true. He just had to make her see it, too.

“That’s a good girl,” he murmured low, his voice cracking as he let go of his restraint. Slamming into her again and again, he knew when she was close, could feel the little tremors that gripped him where he was pressed so deeply, felt it in the way her legs trembled where they were wrapped around his hips, the way her mouth parted on a silent ‘o’. “Yes, Shaun. Give it to me.”

And then she was coming apart in his arms, again, and it was the most amazing thing he’d ever witnessed, the way she came with her entire being. His own release was converging at the base of his spine, drawing tight with every spasm that choked the life out of his cock.

“Kase!” she cried, her eyes wide as she stared up at him. “Please!”

His movements stuttered as he started to come, and he slammed in one more time as rope after rope of cum jetted deep. He wanted to kiss her, wanted to feel her mouth against his as they came together, but he stayed where he was so he could watch her face, be witness to the kaleidoscope of emotions that passed over her. She felt it, whatever this was, just as he did. He was surer of it now than ever before.

That’s why she’d refused to say it. Not because it wasn’t true… but because it was.

Thoughts tumbled around her head like a loose rock in a dryer, bouncing and clanging so loudly she couldn’t concentrate. What the hell had just happened?
