“Go to her. You’ve done a lot for your dad and me. We’ll still need your help, but there’s no reason you can’t leave things on our doorstep like you’ve been doing for her. Maybe it’s time the roles were reversed.”
I look up and see the content on my mom’s face. “But, Mom …”
“Nobuts. I’ll be fine. I’ll miss seeing your face every day, but I know if all of this wasn’t going on, you would have already moved to the city. I’m grateful for the time I’ve had with you. Now, it’s your turn to be with her. Once all of this is over, you’ll be on the road again. Maybe even before we’re out of lockdown. I don’t want you guys to not have your time together. I won’t be selfish and keep you all to myself.”
I smile and cover her hand with mine. “Thanks, Mom.”
The expression on her face says it all. She loves me and wants me to be happy. I finally have the career I’ve always wanted, and now, I’ll have the girl too.
She tilts her head toward the door. “Go get her. But … maybe shower first.” She grins.
I stand up and give her a hug—the last one I’ll give her until our lockdown is lifted.
After I shower and get ready as fast as possible, I hop in my car. When I pull out of the driveway, I see my mom and dad standing with their arms around each other, waving good-bye.
Knowing I’m going toward a relationship like the one they’ve had for years fills me with even more hope.
When I pull up to Sharee’s house, I race out of the car, not wanting to waste a second longer. I didn’t tell her I was heading over, so I know she’s not expecting what’s about to come.
I knock on her door and stand with my hands on the frame. Every time I’ve knocked before, I’ve stepped back, giving both of us space, but not anymore.
She opens the door, still wearing her PJs with her hair up in a messy bun and a stunned expression on her face.
“Drew,” she says breathlessly.
I step into her house and reach out to her, placing my hands on her face and bringing her lips to mine.
She lets out a tiny squeal before throwing her arms around my neck as she falls into our kiss. Our lips mold together, and I pull her closer. As our tongues meet and I taste her for the first time, I let out a growl, only wanting more.
When I move my hands down, she jumps into my arms, wrapping her legs around my waist.
“I couldn’t wait any longer,” I say between our kisses.
“Thank God!” she yells out.
I laugh as she takes my face in her hands, smiling brightly before leaning in to kiss me again.
I break our kiss, and before I can even ask, she points. “That way.”
I smirk. “Yes, ma’am.”
Our lips meet again as I walk us to her bedroom. Instead of throwing her down on the bed, I sit and keep her on my lap. She adjusts her legs around my waist, keeping her fingers on my face as our lips explore each other for the first time.
“I’m trying to go slow,” I say, kissing her between each word.
“Fuck slow. It’s already been slow enough,” she says, and I laugh against her neck.
“Well, in that case.” I toss her to the side, laying her on the bed.
She giggles, and I slide on top of her, brushing her hair out of her face.
“I’m pretty sure I’m in love with you,” I say as I stare into her eyes.
Her hand reaches up to cup my face. “I love you too, Drew.”
I grin. “It’s a damn good thing because I’m kind of homeless now.” I chuckle.
Her arms wrap around my neck. “You mean, I get you full-time?” she asks with a huge smile.
