“We’ll have to lock the doors,” Kylie said as they followed him.
“We’ve already locked the big doors,” Andy said.
“And we put the ‘Closed’ sign where everyone can see it,” Charlie added.
Andrea smiled at her sons. “You’ve been a great help. Let’s get Kylie into our truck.”
Andy took the keys and raced across the parking lot with Charlie. By the time Kylie was sitting in the back seat, Nate was back with the bag.
“I’ll come with you,” he said as he pulled on his seatbelt. “Ben wants me to keep him up to date with what’s happening.”
Andrea was glad he was here. If anything happened on the way into town, she’d have another person to help Kylie.
As she was driving onto the main road, she checked the time. If Kylie had more contractions on the way into town, her baby would definitely be born tonight.
David was walking up the front steps at The Lakeside Inn when Diana hurried outside. “Is everything okay?”
“Oh, thank goodness you’re here. Ethan called to tell me a friend has gone into labor. She’s at the medical clinic with Andrea and the boys.”
That would be why he couldn’t find her. “Is your friend all right?”
“I think so. Andy and Charlie are hungry and Ethan suggested bringing them here. I’m just going to get them.”
“Do you want me to pick them up?”
“I’m happy to go. I’ll give the boys some dinner and take them for a walk with the dogs. Andrea would probably appreciate some company. She’s in the waiting room waiting for Kylie’s husband to arrive.”
David frowned. “Are you talking about Kylie and Ben Thompson?”
“You know them?”
“I met them the first time I visited Sapphire Bay. They’re a great couple.” He took his keys out of his pocket. “I’ll follow you to the clinic.”
“Sounds good.”
David hoped Ben wasn’t far away. Having a baby was a big deal and he wouldn’t want Kylie to go through it on her own. At least there was a doctor in Sapphire Bay and a hospital only half an hour away.
Chapter 23
Andrea smiled at David when he walked into the medical clinic. “I was expecting Diana, but it’s a nice surprise to see you, too.”
“Diana’s here to rescue the boys and I came to keep you company. How’s Kylie?”
“She’s doing okay. Ben arrived about ten minutes ago. They’re deciding whether Kylie needs to go to Polson.”
“I hope she can stay here,” Diana said. “It will be less stressful than going to the hospital.” She looked around the waiting room. “Is Nate still here?”
“His mom picked him up a few minutes ago. He was ready to go home.”
“I thought he might be.” Diana looked at Charlie and Andy. “If we’re talking about going home, who wants to walk my two dogs with me after dinner?”
Both boys jumped to their feet.
“We do,” Charlie said excitedly.
Diana smiled. “I thought you might. You can choose which trail we take around the lake.”
Andy picked up their jackets. “We’re ready.”
