“They haven’t said much, but I think it helped them. We’re seeing Ethan on Friday, so that will make a difference.” She looked at the dark circles under Kylie’s eyes and frowned. “How are you?”

“Tired, grumpy, and restless. I’ve never been the nesting type of person, but I want to tidy everything up.”

“Which is why you’re here?”

“Exactly.”

“Does Ben know you’re in the loft?”

A mischievous smile lit her friend’s face. “No, and he doesn’t need to. Nate’s here to keep me company.”

“Nate’s three stories away,” Andrea reminded her. “If anything happened to you—”

“I’d yell and he’d hear me. Come and see what I found.”

Andrea followed Kylie through a maze of carefully stored furniture and boxes. “Look at the beautiful mirror.”

Kylie looked over her shoulder at the ornate, gilt-framed mirror leaning against the wall. “It’s amazing, isn’t it? It must have belonged to the farm’s previous owners.”

“I wonder how they got it up here.”

“They must have used some kind of hoist. The ladder Ben replaced would have collapsed under the weight of it.” She walked around a pile of boxes and smiled. “This is what I wanted to show you.”

Kylie was standing beside an old, cream cradle. “It’s made from cane or something similar. It must be really old.”

Andrea nudged the cradle and it swung back and forth. “It’s gorgeous. Do you have something for your baby to sleep in?”

“We borrowed a bassinet from a friend, but this is amazing. All I need to do is give it a good clean and find a mattress.”

“You might have to get one custom-made.”

Kylie placed her hand on her baby bump. “We still have a few weeks until our due date. I’m sure I can find something in that time.” She gasped and held onto the side of the cradle.

Andrea placed her hand on Kylie’s arm. “Are you okay?”

“It’s nothing. I’ve been having false contractions for days. Zac said it’s perfectly normal.”

Zac was the doctor everyone saw in Sapphire Bay.

Kylie took a deep breath and rubbed her tummy. “They calm down after a while.”

“How long is ‘a while’?”

“Only a few seconds.” Kylie leaned forward and winced. “They’ve been more painful since this morning.”

Andrea frowned. It looked as though this contraction was longer than a few seconds. “How far apart are they?”

“You sound like Ben. There’s no way our daughter will be born yet. She’s still too high.”

“Babies can change position quickly if they need to.”

With a relieved sigh, Kylie straightened. “See. It’s finished.”

“Do you think you should see Zac?”

“I have an appointment with him on Thursday. I’ll be okay until then. Do you have any ideas about how we can get the cradle downstairs?”

“Now?”
