Katie hurried into the living room.“You started without me?”

“I texted you twenty minutes ago,” Barbara said.“When I didn’t get a reply, I called your cell phone, but you didn’t answer.Where have you been?”

“I was talking to Pastor John at The Welcome Center. We know who took the top tier of the wedding cake.”

Barbara couldn’t wait to hear what had happened. It wasn’t often you lost some of your cake, especially a wedding cake.

Katie leaned over Penny’s shoulder and looked at the photo album.“Ooh.I like that one.Can we buy extra copies of the photos we like?”

“Of course, you can,” Wyatt replied.“We’re paying for our parents and the bridal party to each have six images of their choice. But if you want more, Willow’s happy to print them for you.”

Barbara cleared her throat.“You were telling us about the wedding cake.”

“I was, wasn’t I?”Katie flopped into one of the overstuffed chairs.“Well, I’m happy to report that it was all a huge misunderstanding. The day before the wedding, the hospitality class at the church finished a cake decorating workshop. For their final assessment, the students were placed in pairs and they had two days to bake and decorate a cake.”

Katie looked at everyone.“This is where it gets interesting.Unfortunately, one of the teams left their cake at the church. They couldn’t come back to collect it, so the brother of one of the students picked up his sister’s portion. He knew it was three-tiers, but the only three-tier cake he found was Penny and Wyatt’s.He took the top layer home.It wasn’t until later on Thanksgiving Day that his sister saw the cake. She’s incredibly embarrassed and wanted me to ask if there’s anything she can do to make up for taking the wrong one.”

Barbara sighed.“I’m just glad it was an honest mistake. All I can say is that we’re incredibly lucky Megan had another cake she could quickly decorate.”

Penny nodded.“I agree.Tell her not to worry. We had a lovely day and that’s all that matters.”

“And it was a great tasting cake,” Wyatt added.

Katie looked around the room.“Where’s Diana and Charlie?”

“They’re with Ethan.A friend of his is visiting Sapphire Bay.He doesn’t come here often, so they’re making the most of his visit and going on a hike.Apparently, he makes prosthetic limbs.”

“I bet that’s an interesting job,” Katie said as she studied the photos.“Where are you up to?”

Wyatt turned to the next page.“Group photos.Try not to look too closely at my eyes.I had them glued shut in half the photos.”

Barbara’s cell phone pinged.“I’ll be back in a minute.I think Chloe’s just emailed me.”

Katie grinned.“I hope she has some more information about the exhibition. It’s so exciting.”

Her sister wasn’t the only person who couldn’t wait to see what the team at the Smithsonian had created. From what Chloe had said, it was going to be an amazing display.

As she walked into the dining room, she opened her email account and frowned. The message wasn’t from Chloe. It was from her manager in San Diego. With a pounding heart, she read through the long email. The company she worked for had been bought by an organization based in San Francisco. The new management team wanted to talk to her about a promotion within their new structure.

Attached to the email was the job description and salary scale.Barbara opened the document and skimmed over the requirements of the job.If managing ten staff and traveling extensively along the West Coast wasn’t enough to make her excited, the salary range was.Even if she was paid at the bottom of the salary scale, she’d still be earning twice as much as she was now.

The kitchen door opened and Katie walked into the room.“Was it Chloe?”

Barbara shook her head.“The email’s from my boss. The company I work for has been bought by someone else.”

“What does that mean for you?”

“The new owners want to speak to me about a promotion.”She handed her sister the cell phone.

Katie read the email.“It sounds like a great opportunity.”

“It’s better than great.It’s incredible.”

“Will you speak to them about the job?”

Barbara leaned against the cupboards.“I’d be crazy if I didn’t.”

“What about Theo and the inn?”
