“I had to be.Which makes losing the last documents even more frustrating.”
“Don’t worry.Between you, me, and your friend, Tony, we’ll find her.”Barbara copied the picture of Anne onto her desktop and compared it to the profile images of the women she’d found on Facebook.“I can’t find a Facebook page for her, although I’m not surprised. If I wanted to hide from my boss, I’d delete my social media accounts, too.”
Just to be one hundred per cent certain that she wasn’t skipping over something obvious, she opened each of the profiles.Apart from the generic images of the Empire State Building, Central Park, and Broadway, there was nothing that linked the mayor with any of these women.
Theo showed her the rest of the information he’d used to write his story.
When she saw the amount of money involved, her eyebrows rose.“Why would the mayor risk his career and reputation for eighty thousand dollars?”
“It seems crazy to me, too.The only thing I can put it down to is greed.”
Barbara opened more files and frowned. The deeper she stepped into the story Theo had uncovered, the more worried she became. It was no wonder Steve McGibbons wanted people to think he was innocent. If even half of this information was correct, he’d spend a lot of years behind bars. And if Theo couldn’t prove the story was accurate, he’d never work in New York City again.
CHAPTER 7
Barbara’s eyes widened as she read a story about Theo. She’d already found the article he’d written about the mayor of New York City and two other pieces of work that were just as controversial. She admired his determination to hold people accountable for their actions, but it had come at a high cost to his personal life.
“What are you looking at?”Katie sat beside her and bit into a crunchy apple.
“Nothing.”She lifted her hand to close the lid of her laptop.
“Not so fast.”Katie leaned sideways and looked at the article.“You didn’t tell us Theo used to work forThe New York Times.”
“I didn’t think it mattered.”She tried moving the laptop away, but Katie grabbed hold of one side and kept reading.
“There are a lot of things you didn’t mention, including the four prestigious journalism awards he’s won.”
“I didn’t know about those.”
Katie sent her a searching look.“What else have you discovered about the mysterious Theo Montgomery?”
“He isn’t mysterious. He just prefers to keep his personal life private.”
“Which is why you’re stalking him on the Internet instead of talking to him?”
“I’m not stalking him.I’m—”
“Searching all the websites and social media sites you can find.”Her sister pointed to the tabs she’d already opened.
“All right.I’ll admit I was a little curious.”
Katie grinned.“Don’t worry.I won’t tell him.So, what did you discover?”
Barbara looked at the kitchen door, worried that Theo or her other sisters would suddenly appear.
“We’ve got the house to ourselves.Penny’s taken Mr.and Mrs.Prendergast to Bigfork and Diana took the Smiths to Polson. Our other guests are on a steamboat cruise.”
That made her feel slightly better, but not much.“If I tell you what I know, you have to promise not to tell anyone.”
Katie frowned.“What has Theo done?”
“Nothing illegal.”Barbara sighed.“He moved to Sapphire Bay to keep a low profile.”
“And if everyone knows who he is, it defeats the whole purpose in coming here?”
“Exactly.”
“Okay.I promise not to say anything.”
