He kisses me lightly, tenderly. “Then don’t let the exception to the rule scare you away from helping those that need it, beautiful.” He squeezes me close again, then whispers, “Can I take you home?”
I nod, sighing. “Yes.”
He stands, pulling me up with him. He swipes under my lashes again, smiling down at me as he does, then kisses my forehead before leading us out the door. When we get to the sidewalk, he leans in close and lets his hand rest on the top curve of my ass, his fingers flexing. And then he’s glaring down at me. I blink up at him, confused by the sudden change.
“Whatever torture device you have on under these clothes that you think you need to keep all of this contained—” he bends low to whisper in my ear, making me shiver, “—take it off and throw it away.”
I blush furiously, laughing up at him. “Xander, I’m not throwing away my spanx, they smooth everything out?—”
He shakes his head as we stop at my minivan. He opens the door and I slide in, but he doesn’t shut the door right away. Instead, he leans in and kisses me deeply, his tongue swirling into my mouth and I can’t help the moan that rumbles out of me.

Colleen is outside with Bea in her arms when I pull into the driveway, just shortly after Teddy.
“Oh good, you’re home,” Colleen says to Teddy, hugging her when she climbs out of the minivan. “I was wondering if you’d let me pick up Penny and Dalton from school today and take them to get a treat.” The older woman gestures over to where I’m just climbing out of my truck and winks. “Let you two kids have a proper ‘welcome home’.”
“Colleen!” Teddy whisper-hisses and I grin widely as Teddy blushes furiously. Colleen winks and I huff out a low chuckle as I cross the yard to where both women are standing.
Bea waves her chubby arms at me and I let her grab hold of my index finger in hello. I beam down at the tiny thing that has me so thoroughly wrapped around her little finger. All of Teddy’s kids do, to be honest. I’m crazy about all of them.
“That’s very generous of you, Colleen,” I murmur, just a hint of teasing in my tone.
“I’m just glad my meddling worked,” the older woman says, and I smile at Teddy while the blush staining her cheeks spreads to her chest.
“You’re the worst,” Teddy whispers, hiding her face behind her hand and shaking her head. “This isn’t normal, Colleen.”
“Pfft.” Colleen waves one hand and laughs, then winks at me again. God, I adore this woman. So off the wall and not at all what I would expect. “Since when have I ever done anything to benormal? Go on, I’m going to get little miss loaded up and then we’re going to head out. You two have fun. We’ll be back in a few hours.”
“Ohmygod,” Teddy moans, burying her face in both hands as her shoulders shake with laughter. Colleen heads back into the house with Bea, leaving us out in the yard. Dropping her hands, she huffs out an embarrassed little laugh as she looks up at me. “I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t apologize.” Ducking low, I set my lips against the shell of her ear and breathe huskily, “I’m going to use every second of those few hours to worship this body, Teddy.”
“Holy shit,” she whispers, swaying into me slightly.
I chuckle, planting my mouth against the underside of her jaw. “I need to shower.”
“Okay,” she breathes, her lids fluttering closed. I groan, settling my body against her side, pressing my hips into her. I’m already hard, erection straining behind the fly of my nomex pants.“Don’t take too long.”
