His other option is... “An old air strip.” There’s one thirty miles north of their current location.
“I’ll send backup.”
“Move fast. I’m not waiting.”
Gray swears. “Be smart, King. You’re risking your life going alone.”
“More than that,” I tell him. My career. My life. Things I used to think were important. I pause half a beat, because this needs to be said. I might not get another chance. “Thanks for taking me on, Calhoun. You saved my life.”
I disconnect the call.
Splashing some water on my face clears my eyes and head enough to think straight. I grab my leather jacket off the hook and head for the garage out back. The door rolls open under my hand.
I grab my helmet, then pull my phone out. There’s one more person I need to contact.
I type out a fast message.
Bronco: She’s gone.
Dallas: Where?
I send my brother the tracking link.My thumb hovers over the on-screen keyboard. Then...
Bronco: I did everything right. I followed my gut, and it still went to hell. It’s Afghanistan all over again.
Dallas: No, it isn’t. It’s not a fucking ice pond either. You’re not responsible.
My heart clenches so tight, my chest aches.
Bronco: I can’t lose her.
Dallas: Then don’t spiral. She needs you.
Dallas: So do I. I’m coming.
I swing a leg over myDucati Multistrada, the engine snarling to life beneath me. Helmet strapped on, I rev the engine, kick into first and rip down the road after my woman.
CHAPTER TWELVE
CAMILLE
I’m trapped in luxury.
The world blurs by outside, barely visible through the black tinted windows of the armor-plated Escalade. Aiden relaxes beside me, sipping a bourbon like he’s on the way home from the office.
A second Escalade follows with the rest of his security detail.
This could be any other night of my life, except my clothes aren’t tailored and my mother isn’t in the car lecturing me to sit up straight, then rolling her eyes like I’m hopeless and flirting with my fiancé.
The locket rests between my breasts, tucked away from Aiden’s gaze. My fingers itch to hold it. To have an anchor to hope.
But I can’t get the last vision I had of Bronco out of my head. He was so still. Blood pooled near his temple, dark against the wood floors. Shards of glass glittered in the red liquid from the destruction Aiden’s men did to his beautiful home.
“I’m sorry it took so long to find you, darling. The men responsible for the delay have been punished of course, but that’s no relief to you. You must have been terrified.”
“I was.”That you wouldn’t leave me alone..
He pats my hand like I’m a child. “I’m here now.”
