“You and I both know that, but Kahn? I don’t think he thought that far ahead. Most families don’t when they’re faced with a situation like this,” Reeve replied. “Hey, I’m pulling up now.”
“See you in a few.”
Ending the call, Reeve turned off the engine and looked up at Kahn’s room, noticing the lights were off. He wasn’t sure if his mate had gone to bed or…
“Hey, Boss, you okay?”
Looking over at one of his enforcers standing next to his SUV, Reeve gave a brief smile, before opening the door. “Yeah…it’s just been a long day. Any problems?”
“Nope, it’s been quiet as a tomb.”
“Good,” Reeve responded, heading for the side door of the safe house. The first thing that hit him when he got inside, was the smell of freshly made coffee.Fuck, could I use some of that.
As he entered the kitchen, Heath was pouring the coffee into a mug which he then handed to his boss. “There’s more where that came from.”
Taking a sip, Reeve groaned as the shot of caffeine hit his body. Hopefully, it and several more cups would get him through what he knew in his soul was going to be a long, shitty night.
Chapter 25
Setting his empty mug down after his third cup of coffee, Reeve looked at Heath. “I’m staying here tonight so I need you at the Silver Point Pack just in case Rudy’s supporters make a move to free him.”
“Do you know who they are?”
“Not yet,” Reeve said, frowning, “but my gut tells me they are there. And if the word spreads about Josiah’s death, they might view it as a perfect opportunity to install Rudy as the new Alpha.”
“They can’t do that legally without Rudy challenging Kahn,” Heath muttered.
“They could if Kahn was dead,” Reeve said. “That’s why I’m staying here tonight; I’ll be waiting if that asshole and his followers try anything. They won’t know what hit them by the time I’m through with them.”
“You really think something will happen tonight?”
“Yeah, I do. Someone already knows Josiah’s dead…”
“And that’s how Kahn found out,” Heath mused.
“My guess is they don’t know where Kahn is and hoped he’d rush back to the pack where it would be easy to kill him, leaving the door open for Rudy to claim the Alpha title.”
“Shit! You sure you don’t want me to stay here?” asked Heath.
“I need you there more,” Reeve replied. “I’m pretty sure Rudy’s supporters are some of the Silver Point enforcers, I just don’t know which ones yet.”
“Wouldn’t it have made more sense for Rudy to recruit regular pack members? No one, not even Josiah, would have suspected that.”
“They might have let something slip…they’re not used to cloak and dagger stuff. On the other hand, none of Rudy’s enforcers would be suspected since they work closely with him all the time.”
“That makes sense,” Heath murmured.
“I was told earlier this evening the Council is sending me more men, but until they arrive, we’re on our own.”
Nodding, Heath said, “How soon will they be here?”
“Sometime tomorrow.”
“I’ll double the guards on the compound where the Silver Point enforcers are, set up patrols, and institute a curfew for everyone else.”
“Sounds good,” Reeve said. “Call me if there’s a problem.”
Picking up the keys to one of the Council’s vehicles on his way to the back door, Heath wished Reeve good luck.
