Chapter 6

At the chateau, Glenn stared unseeingly at his phone’s dark screen, his mind still back on the mountain with Smokey and the humans. It was the second time he’d been involved in incidents of humans hunting shifters and this was just too much of a coincidence—especially since both times included violence?and that was two times too many as far as he was concerned. His gut told him the humans Smokey ran into were just the tip of the iceberg, but unless Riley could find out more about those who attacked him and his mates at the campgrounds back in LA or dig up info about the ones on the mountain, he was sitting with his thumb up his ass and nothing to do except wait for the next attack.

“Tiger mate?”

Hearing Alex’s voice shook Glenn out of his reverie. Looking up, he saw his mate standing in the library’s doorway. “Hey buttercup, everything okay?”

Before Alex could respond, Sawyer appeared next to him, tucking his mate under his arm. “We sensed your tiger’s agitation and wondered what was causing it. Who were you talking to? Does it have anything to do with the man after Alex?”

Seeing the hesitation on Glenn’s face, Alex piped up. “Tiger mate, you promised us…no more secrets.”

“I was talking to Smokey and Ghost.”

“Oh boy…secret agent stuff!” exclaimed Alex, wiggling out from beneath Sawyer’s arm before sitting down next to Glenn.

“He didn’t say that,” Sawyer muttered, slowly walking over to his mates.

“Of course he did,” Alex insisted. “C’mon tiger mate, what’s the 4-1-1 on our mission?”

Glenn frowned. “Mission?”

Snorting, Sawyer sat down opposite his mates. “4-1-1?”

“Duh…info! If we’re going to go capture the bad dude, then we need to know everything,” Alex replied. “So go ahead, tiger mate…when do we leave?”

Scowling, Sawyer stared at Glenn. “What the fuck? You’re letting our pregnant mate go on a dangerous mission to get the asshole who’s been hunting him!”

“Whoa…wait a minute!” Glenn held up his hands. “There’s no fucking mission except the one you guys already know about.”

“What about the call?” Alex asked.

“That was about the trouble Smokey ran into on his way to get Kevin’s parents,” Glenn explained.

“So it had nothing to do with the Collector?” asked Sawyer.

“It might…”

Before Glenn could finish, Alex jumped in. “OMG…Smokey found a clue but doesn’t know what it means so he calls for some help to figure it out. Well, that’s what we are here for…go ahead, tiger mate, lay it on us! The sooner we figure out the clue, the sooner we can go find him.”

“Glenn!” Sawyer growled warningly. “Our mate is pregnant!”

“Stop! Both of you! There’s no clue, no mission, no nothing,” Glenn emphasized loudly. And before he could be interrupted again, he told them what happened to Smokey and his own thoughts about the humans. “So when I said itmightbe about the Collector…that’s exactly what I meant. There isn’t any firm evidence he was behind the humans and in fact, everything points to someone else. That’s what I was thinking about when you guys came in.”

“Are you sure you don’t know about any more run-ins with humans?” asked Sawyer.

“There might be more,” Glenn conceded, “but I’ve never heard of any.”

“But you kinda feel there are more, don’t cha?” asked Alex.

Smiling grimly at his mates, Glenn nodded. “It wouldn’t be the first time the agency kept something like this from me. These humans are too well organized for them to be new at this...”

“And since Smokey and Ghost don’t know about other attacks,” Alex conjectured, “it only follows your bosses are keeping it a secret.”

“That isn’t necessarily true,” Sawyer replied. “Maybe there’s nothing to tell. This could be a new threat the agency is clueless about.”

“Yeah…it could be,” Glenn muttered.

“You don’t really think so, do you tiger mate?” asked Alex.
