Her eyes narrowed. “And you think this… me, tied up in your basement… is gonna make him pay?”

“I know it will.”

She leaned forward, cuffed hands clinking. “He’ll let me rot. My father never bends.”

I stared at her for a moment. Then I said, “Then you’re gonna be here for a while.”

Her lips tightened. “Wrong move. You don’t know who he is and who he knows.”

“No,” I said, slowly, making sure she heard every word. “Youdon’t know whoIam and whoIknow.” That shut her up. I stood up, fixed my sleeves again, and nodded at Crook. “Put her in the south room. Uncuff her. Let her breathe.”

“You sure?” Crook asked.

“She’s not going anywhere.”

I looked at her one more time. Princess was quiet now, watching me like she was still trying to figure out what kind ofman I was. I’d let her wonder. She’d find out real soon that I wasn’t the kind of man you crossed and lived to tell about it.
