Put that way, it made him sound like a real double dealer.

“It wasn’t enough. My daughter is educated. She has all the domestic skills as well as others that can lend support to any sleuth. And she’s untouched.” He smirked. “At least, she was.”

It was all I could do not to strangle him right there, but that would have the wolves on me. Millie’s father might think our choice of locations was to protect ourselves, but it was really saving his life. “Just tell us your bottom line.”

He named a price. A high one.

“And if we meet your demands, we will never hear from you or anyone from your sleuth again?”

“No.”

“Then done.”

At this point, Cannon and Felix were looking at me as if I’d lost my mind. Maybe I had, and I didn’t care if it meant I had to borrow from my ex-boss’s pack; we were buying peace of mind. Somehow, I’d get it.

We left, soon after, and on the way to the car, Felix said, “I know you mean to do whatever it takes, but I think there might be another way.”

Chapter Twenty-One

Millie

Cannon and I and all of the guys really had had a grueling day, but as the sun set and we were safely in our little home, together, I remembered what I’d asked the alpha. Riding the high of sharing dreams and affection with Tyrone, I’d let Cannon know I wanted that with him.

And now, I wasn’t sure if I had the energy. It seemed very ungrateful to back out when they’d put themselves out there for me with my father and whichever of the leadership of the sleuth he’d brought with him.

They were all terribly closemouthed about the whole thing, only saying they’d reached a resolution and I shouldn’t worry. Of course, “don’t worry” is the best thing to say when a person should worry. And I knew those males—they were all about money and wouldn’t hesitate to back out on a deal if they thought they could get away with it. I had done everything I could to lower my value, which they would regard as stealing from them, and no matter what they told the guys, they might still try to take me back and resell me for more money.

If not for that poor omega starting heat, confusing all the males’ brains, I’d never have pulled it off at all. I sure hoped she was doing all right. And the others. The system that promoted the sale of omegas could not be allowed to go on. I just didn’t know how to do anything about it. If I could come up with a solution, just for that sleuth, I’d be saving a lot of omegas from being part of that system.

“Millie, ready for bed?” Cannon came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist. He nuzzled my neck then murmured, “If you’re too tired, I understand. I’ll be disappointed, but we have a whole lifetime ahead of us.”

“I’m very tired, but I don’t sleep well alone, anymore, and I think I’ll rest better with you.” Oh goddess, that sounded terrible. “I don’t mean that—”

“Omega, you can’t imagine what a compliment it is that you sleep better with one of us. My room?”

“I think so.”

“We will get all warm and cozy and see where we go from there. If it’s only to dreamland, it will be a pleasure to go there with you.”

A frisson of alarm shot up my spine. What if we couldn’t meet in our dreams? If it was only Tyrone, would the others resent that connection?

As if reading my mind, he said, “Don’t overthink this. We are all your mates, but each of our relationships are going to be a little different. I’d love to be in dreams with you, but we’ll have to see if that’s our connection or if we have something different.”

The alpha had so much power in his words. He could make me feel better just by speaking to me. I knew other alphas who used their gifts for negative things. But those had no place in this evening. Arm in arm, we went to his room and stepped inside, closing the door behind us.

He eyed me, still wearing my jeans and hoodie. “Did you want to change in your room?”

Shoot, the night before, I’d been in a nightgown, but tonight, I was wearing regular clothes. That meant, I either went and changed or got in bed with him in my underwear. Or naked. I was about to say I’d get a nightgown when a sudden boldness came over me. “I’m good. If you don’t mind me without a nightgown.”

His eyes glowed in the light of the bedside lamp, more bear than human for a moment before he took back control. “Omega, I always sleep in the nude. It’s nice of you to join me that way so I’m not the only one.”

“Yeah, that’s one way to think of it.” Before I could lose my nerve, I pulled off my sweatshirt and then unzipped my jeans. I was afraid he’d want to do it, but he seemed to sense my reticence and went about taking off his own clothes.

Tyrone and I had been in the dark the whole time, but Cannon’s body was well displayed in the lamplight. Tall, broad-shouldered, with a narrow waist and muscular thighs. How I had rated three of the hottest alphas in the world as well as the kindest, I’d never know. But I was grateful. Cannon approached me slowly, but I held out my arms and welcomed him into my embrace. He kissed me deeply, exploring my mouth with his lips and tongue, and I held on for dear life as he lifted me and settled me onto his cock, the tip gliding through the slick, making him groan. He backed me up to the wall and adjusted our position. “You good like this, omega?”

“Y-yes.” Incredible to be held up like this as if I weighed nothing. “Very good.” He was in me, filling me, and nothing else mattered. The world could take care of itself while my alpha took his pleasure from my body and gave it at the same time. I pitied any female who was not me right at this moment.

He never set me down until after he brought me to orgasm twice then came himself, his knot swelling inside me. His teeth on my throat were a sharp pleasure-pain. I returned the favor, releasing my bite just as he laid me in his bed and left to return with a warm, damp cloth to clean me.
