Was this what love felt like?
It should be too soon, but at the same time, he couldn’t think of any other explanation. At the very least, he was falling in love with her, if he wasn’t already there yet.
He should tell her, right?
That would be the right thing to do.
That’s what women wanted. That’s what he’d always held back from before. But he wanted things to be different with Audrey, so he needed to make them different.By being open with her.
By telling her.
It was supposed to be kind of a big moment, though, right? He should do something special to set it up.To show her as well as tell her.
Or he could tell her right now.Show her in the moment.
Which felt like a lot.But if he put it off, he wasn’t sure he wouldn’t just keep putting it off.Be different, Mason.Don’t lose her.
Taking a deep breath, he pulled away slightly so he could see her face.
Her eyes were closed.
Her breathing was even.
“Audrey.”He said her name softly. He’d thought she was asleep before, and she hadn’t been.
But she didn’t stir.
She was out.
Mason let out his breath on a long sigh.Swung his body back toward the nightstand so he could turn off the light before returning to position and pulling her against him again. She snuggled right in.He’d found that she was a bit of an aggressive sleep snuggler.Which he liked.
It was like having his own personal teddy bear. But warmer. And sexier.
“Audrey,” he whispered in the darkness.“I’m falling in love with you.”
There was no answer other than the soft sound of her breathing.
Next time, he’d say it when she was awake.
Eventually.
ChapterForty-Three
Audrey
Mason was acting oddly. Not bad oddly, exactly, but oddly. He watched her intently over breakfast. He kept glancing at her when he drove her to the bakery. And for a moment, she thought he was going to say something when he dropped her off, but then he pulled back.
If Alexis hadn’t been walking up right at that moment, she might have gotten up the courage to ask what was up with him.
He didn’t seem like he’d lost interest in her overnight or anything; he was just… off.
Maybe it was everything at work.
“Good morning,” she said to Alexis, getting out of the car after getting a very thorough kiss from Mason that left her cheeks bright pink and not because of the cold slap of air.
“Looks like you’re having a very good morning,” Alexis joked. She’d gotten a lot more comfortable with Audrey and Ashley during their days working together, and it showed in moments like this.
“I am.”Audrey grinned. She’d had an even better night last night.Part of her wished she could have had a similar kind of morning, but she’d slept so hard, they’d woken up too late for fun times.
