“Uh…I’m on my way.”
“You were supposed to be here hours ago. What the hell, JR?”
“Sorry, I got…held up.”
“Yeah, I heard all about that. Fucking a woman against a car. Must have been a real emergency.”
“I didn’t fuck her against the car,” I said lamely. “I’ll be there in five.”
“Ten. You’re at that scummy hotel that I told you not to go to. I can’t believe you took her there.”
“How the hell do you know where I am?”
“It’s a small town, JR. When are you gonna get that?”
She hung up without another word.
“Fucking spies everywhere,” I muttered, making my way to my truck.
Getting in, I slammed the door, seriously considering just skipping work tonight, but I had already taken off because of Alyssa. That wouldn’t be fair to her, even though I didn’t want to admit that I cared at all.
Cranking the engine, I turned and nearly had a heart attack when I saw the damn dog sitting in my truck again. He whined pathetically, his eyes welling with tears.
“What the fuck is your problem?”
He whined again, resting his head on the seat. So, he was pissed at me, too. Fucking perfect.
“Hey! No dogs in here!”Lizzy shouted as the mutt ran past me, right up to Lizzy, and rubbed up against her leg. “JR, what the hell?”
“I didn’t bring him. He just shows up where I am.”
Cocking her hip, she balanced the tray she was holding against it. “Are you telling me that this dog just happens to follow you around, yet you stake no claim to it?”
“Precisely.”
“It followed you into the bar.”
“It did not. I shut the door. I don’t know how the hell it got inside.”
“JR—”
“Relax. I’ll take care of it.”
Whistling at the dog, he jumped up and followed me back to the entrance. As soon as I opened the door, he bolted out, spinning around to wait for me, only to see the door slam in his face.
That taken care of, I got behind the bar and went to work. It only took two minutes for me to see his fluffy white tail wagging as he wove his way through the tables to sit at the foot of Cheyenne and Bailey’s table.
“Hey, there!” Bailey squealed, bending over to pet the dog. “He’s so adorable!”
The kitchen door swung open and Lizzy stopped, gaping at the dog. “Didn’t you just put him outside?”
“Yes.”
“Who came in?”
“No one. I’m telling you, this shit just happens.”
“This shit doesn’t just happen,” she snapped. “There are things that—” She sucked in a breath, holding her side as pain creased her face.
