Then again, maybe she wasn’t thoughtful. I didn’t understand it. How could anyone be so cruel? Did she have a bad childhood? Was she beaten by nuns and was still rebelling all these years later?

“Hey, where did you grow up?”

“Outside of Detroit.”

“Oh, I’ve never been there. Is it nice?”

“Nothing about Detroit is nice,” she scoffed. “Then again, at least there were things to do. How do you stand this town? It’s so boring?”

“I like it. What’s it like in a city?”

She sighed, glancing out the window. “Well, my mom wasn’t around very much. She was always working. And my dad ran out on us when I was five, so I never really knew him.”

“Oh, that’s terrible. So, it was just you and your mom?”

“Most of the time. She had her men she brought around. Each one more irritating than the last.”

Well, that explained some of her attitude. Most people wanted better than what they had growing up, and it sounded like her youth wasn’t exactly easy as pie.

“My mom died about seven years ago. Did Sawyer tell you?”

“Yeah. He started getting all weepy, so I slept with him,” she grinned. “That put a smile on his face really fast.”

And now we were back to sex. Wasn’t there anything this woman thought of other than pleasuring herself?

“Well…” I said as we pulled into the driveway. I really wasn’t sure what else to say.

Thanks for making my lunch absolutely horrible.

You’re very selfish and I hope you leave Sawyer soon.

I couldn’t let her go inside without giving it one more shot, not if I had any hope of telling Sawyer I tried.

“Hey, Scarlet, you know, if you ever want to talk about anything, you can come to me.”

Flipping down the visor, she checked her makeup in the mirror. “Talk about what?”

“Oh, you know…things that might be painful to discuss? Maybe what happened with your mom?”

“Why would I want to discuss that?”

Her eyes kept darting to my window, and after she fixed her makeup, she started adjusting her clothes. What the hell?—

And that’s when I saw him. JR was just getting home, probably getting ready to go to the bar, and she was preening for him.

I scoffed, shaking my head at the blatant disrespect. “You know, you’re engaged to my brother!”

“I know that,” she muttered. “But it doesn’t hurt to look. Everyone does it. Sawyer and I were at this bar, and we played this little game where we pointed out all the people we would sleep with if we had the chance. It’s no big deal.”

I found it hard to believe that Sawyer was on the same page with her during their little game. In fact, she was probably trying to find someone better the whole time. And now she was doing it again.

Well, I had news for her; there was no way JR would give her anything more than a night in bed.

Just the thought of that really made me mad. It wasn’t like I had any claim on JR. We were just neighbors. I occasionally slept on his couch. Even the rumors about us were false, but they were still rumors about the two of us, and she was encroaching on my…non-territory.

“‘Kay, I’ll see you later,” she smiled, hurrying out of the car and rushing up the drive.

Hustling in her high heels, she purposely fell to the ground, crying out that she twisted her ankle. I watched in amusement as JR barely glanced at her, then shoved his door open and slammed it shut. My soon-to-be sister-in-law got up in a huff, brushing off her clothes as she stomped into the house dejectedly.
