“Yeah, he’s always complaining about all the paperwork piled up on his desk. He might be open to hiring someone to help with that,” Josh added after I gave him a puzzled look.

Letting out a small sigh, I nodded. Better than nothing, I guessed. I followed Seth over to the desk and took the pen he offered. Since I didn’t have a phone yet, I wrote down my name and email address. No harm in leaving it, though I’d already concluded that nothing would come from this place.

“Thanks, guys.”

Josh smiled at me as Seth responded, “You’re welcome, pretty girl. Be careful now, I’m sure we’ll see you soon.”

Waving, I turned and headed back outside. Deciding I’d had enough going door to door, I made my way toward the library to start my search online.

The sun had sethours ago, making my walk home dark. I wasn’t terrified of the night, but it wasn’t something I enjoyed being out in. It brought up memories that I wanted to stay buried deep in the back of my mind. Suddenly, the sound of something moving down an alley had me picking up my pace. After dashing up my driveway, I quickly unlocked the door and slipped inside.

Resting against the door, I caught my breath as my heart rate settled back to normal. It was just an animal or something; there was no reason for me to be this freaked out. I was safe now, nothing was going to harm me.

When I was finally calm, I pulled my bag from my shoulder and dropped it on the counter. I pulled the hair tie out and threw my hair into a bun on the top of my head. The humidity had done a number on my hair today, so I currently looked like a hot mess.

From the cabinets, I pulled out a mac and cheese cup and popped it in the microwave. It was a blessing that the person who owned my house before decided they didn’t want any of the appliances when they moved out. I was able to cross off quite a bit of the list of things I needed to buy because of their generosity.

Everything was old and dirty, but nothing a little elbow grease couldn’t fix. It was a task I had decided to do this weekend after I was done job searching. Thinking about a future job, I reached over and pulled out all the applications I had collected today. It was going to take me a while to fill them all out, so I grabbed my food and a pen before heading to bed.

After I completed them all out to the best of my ability, I carefully slid all the applications back inside my bag until tomorrow. I made sure the house was locked and stripped out of my clothes before crawling into bed. With a sigh, I pulled Ophelia into my arms and snuggled up with Alicia’s blanket, ready to finally go to sleep.

CHAPTER 3

BEAU

This paperwork was goingto be the death of me. Who knew that saving people would have so much writing involved? I sure didn’t, and if I had, I probably wouldn’t have gone into this business.

Okay, I was lying to myself. I loved my company and the work we did, but I just hated sitting in this office for hours trying to make sure all my shit was in order. Right now, none of my shit was in order, and I couldn’t remember what I needed for the finance report.

After flipping through the papers again, I finally found the folder hidden under another mess I needed to deal with.

“Goddamnit!” I cursed out.

Of course, as I grabbed that folder, I knocked another stack of paper off my desk. Letting out a sigh, I resisted the urge to swipe my hand across what was left on my desk, barely.

“Whoa there, Beau.” I heard from the doorway. Zach stood staring at me with concern. Guess he could see just how close I was to losing it.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt the beginning of your spiral. Maybe you need a break, man,” he said as he walked overand began picking up the papers that were now scattered around the foot of my desk.

Zach was right, and I was sure the rest of the guys would agree. Sadly, being the boss meant that vacation time didn’t happen often, and I didn’t see one coming any time soon.

He dropped the stack of papers on my desk again. “Seth and Josh said a woman came in looking for a job. Maybe you should consider hiring someone to help with all this. You’re going to drive yourself into an early grave if you don’t start asking for help.”

I glanced at the corner of my desk where Seth had dropped a sticky note the other day. I’d brushed it off at first when he told me how he and Josh met someone who was looking for a job, and they felt like she would be a good fit for him in the office.

After grabbing the sticky note, I looked down at the paper.

Rebekah Simpson - [email protected]

There wasn’t a phone number listed, only an email address. I found that strange, but didn’t have time to question it. “You’re right, I can’t continue to do this. I’m going to lose my mind. I’ll reach out to Rebekah and see if she wants to come in for an interview,” I said, glancing back up at Zach, who was pouring himself a drink at my bar.

Shaking my mouse, I brought up my email and drafted a new message.

Ms. Simpson,

This is Beau, owner of Shadow Force Tactical. My apologies for taking a few days to reach out about a job. If you are still interested, I would like to extend aninvitation to interview you and discuss what I am looking for.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
