Adam made a note on his phone.“We’ll check him out.Just in case.Especially since the exterior doors weren’t damaged.Just this one to the lab where all Harmony’s tests are.”

“She’s not the only one who works in here,” Damien said immediately.

Adam snorted.“Are you trying to convince me this is because of someone else?”

Damien growled softly.“Dammit.”

“We’ll figure it out.I’ll get with Marcus later. You two need to do something to get your minds off all of this.”

“Like what?”

“Hang out with friends.Get out of your heads.Enjoy your time together a little bit.”Adam’s smirk said he saw through any professional distance Damien was trying to portray.

“I’m keeping her safe.”

“I married the last person I protected,” Adam said.“I’m not going to judge you for a second. When you find your other half, it doesn’t matter who it is, when, or what else is going on.It just makes it harder to move on after the job is over.”

“I’m not looking forward to that.”

Adam clapped Damien on the back.“If the looks she keeps sliding this way are any indication, you won’t have to worry.”

Damien’s gaze snapped to Harmony’s and found her staring at him.Her cheeks pinked when he caught her.Damien fought a smile.

“Are you calling out the lovebirds?”Lorelei asked as she joined Damien and Adam.

Adam snorted.“Yep.”

“I thought I had a poker face.”

“Wrong kind of poker,” Lorelei murmured.

Adam barked a laugh, then smothered it in a hurry.“Probably shouldn’t be laughing in the middle of an investigation.”

“We all suck at keeping it in our pants, don’t we?”Lorelei asked.

“Jesus,” Damien breathed.

Lorelei winked at him.“She has some fire in her.I like her.”

“Me, too,” Damien admitted.

“Yeah, I know.”Lorelei shook her head.“This all sucks. How’s she handling it?”

“As well as she can, I guess. We’re usually after the immediate stuff.I’m not used to the attacks coming from an unknown source.”

“They’re always unknown,” Lorelei said.“Even if we know they’re coming, if we knew who was going to carry shit out, we’d stop them in advance.Samuel would be here to hold his grandson if we knew who was coming for them that day.”

Damien sucked in a breath, his chest hurting at the mention of his old teammate and mentor.Samuel was a great man, but he was killed during what should have been a routine assignment. It taught all of them there was no such thing as routine.

“I told him they need to leave the love nest and mingle with the upright,” Adam told Lorelei.

Lorelei nodded at Adam’s colorful instructions.“Probably a good idea.A woman can only take so much before she’s walking funny.”

Damien closed his eyes and tried not to laugh at the two of them.

“Go see the baby.Check on Austin and Lacey,” Adam suggested.

“We should.I’ll ask Harmony if she’s up for that.”
