“But I’m not your partner.Partners need to know someone has their back. They need to know they can count on each other. If Rhett isn’t doing that, we need to make a change.”
“It’ll be fine.He doesn’t seem to like change.”
“Who the fuck does?Change sucks.Especially when it’s because someone died.We all miss Samuel.Moving Teddy to work with Austin seemed like a good idea at the time, but maybe it wasn’t.Maybe Austin and Rhett should be together, and you and Teddy should work together.”
“I’ll be fine with Rhett,” Eve said.If they shifted everyone around six months after she started there, she’d be labeled as a problem. No one would want to work with her. She’d been through it enough times to know that.
When she ran the security department at The Davidson, she was in charge. She knew how things worked. She knew when one member of the team started making noise about not working well with someone, they were usually the one to blame. She was not going to give Montgomery Rose, or any of the protectors, a reason to think she was a problem.
She just had to figure out how to get Rhett to stop being such an asshole.
“If you say so,” Walker said.“But let me know if you need me to say something to him, or to Mont.”
Eve nodded.“Will do.”Not on your life, but she didn’t have to add that part.
Montgomery called Walker over to where he was, and Walker nodded before squeezing Eve’s arm.He released her and jogged over to Montgomery.
Eve forced a smile, then looked for her partner. He was by the SUV, talking to the agents, so she took a minute to update Damien.
Grant Pickens is dead. His brother is in custody.Bigger than we knew, but the threat is over.Any update on Harmony?
No update.
Eve waited for more, but that was it.She drew a breath and nodded.Hopefully no news was good news.
Because losing someone else was not something their team could handle at the moment. They needed Harmony to make it.
Twenty-Three
Harmony was floating.Free.At peace. It was a funny feeling, like being a bird.
Or an angel.
A sudden sadness washed over her at the thought. She wanted to see Damien one more time.Really, she wanted a longer life with him.But Grant Pickens won.He stole her away from Damien.
Hopefully Damien stopped him before he hurt anyone else. The man was dangerous.
A muffled noise drew Harmony’s focus away from her sadness to whatever was around her.It almost sounded like voices.
“Heaven,” she whispered.
“Sorry, beautiful, but not quite.”
Her eyes opened. It was dim, like someone had turned all the lights off.She stared at a ceiling. She never imagined heaven having ceilings.
“Can you hear me?”
Something moved next to her.Slowly, it moved in front of her.But it was blurry.
Damn, she still needed glasses in heaven.
“Hold on.”
Something else moved over her, then her vision cleared.“Damien?”
“Fuck, it’s good to hear my name on your lips.I’m going to sit you up, okay?”
He disappeared again, leaving her to stare at the ceiling. It looked like a hospital.
