“Yes ...” I whisper, voice unsteady.
A low, rough sound rumbles in his chest, his hands sliding up my rib cage, fingertips teasing beneath my shirt, grazing bare skin.
The wind stirs the pine trees around us.
I shiver.
His body tenses against mine, and then, without warning, he shifts, grabbing the truck bed as he hoists himself up beside me. The movement is fluid—effortless—like he couldn’t stand another second of distance between us.
He nudges my legs farther apart, fitting himself between them as he presses me down against the bed of the truck. The metal beneath us is cold, a stark contrast to the warmth of his body, the heat of his hands as they slide over my hips, my waist.
I arch into him, sighing against his lips as his fingers dip beneath my shirt again, tracing lazy patterns against my skin.
“I want to fuck you in the bed of my truck like I’m in high school again,” he groans. “Is that what we’re doing?”
His groan is low, guttural, vibrating through me as he kisses me again, deeper this time, hungrier.
And I let him.
I let myself fall.
Chapter 26
Harris
The second I climbed into the back of that truck with Lucy—the second she pulled at me with those desperate hands—any rational thought I had in my brain evaporated into the breeze.
Lucy iseverywhere. Beneath me, around me, in my head, under my skin. She clutches my shirt as if she could pin me down, breath stuttering when I press deeper into her. Warm. Soft. Womanly.
I shouldn’t let this go any further, because I’m leaving.
But I will.
Because I’m a selfish bastard.
She shivers because it’s not exactly warm outside, and for a brief second, I think she might be shivering because of me as my hands trace the smooth expanse of her stomach, my lips teasing the spot along her jaw. Below her ear ...
When the wind picks up again, it threads its way through the trees, curling over us. Chilly. Causes Lucy’s fingers to twitch against my shoulders.
I smirk, running my hands over the curve of her hips. “So you’re using me for body heat?”
She shrugs, all innocence. “Gotta take advantage while I can.”
Something in my chest tightens at that. She’s teasing—but there’s truth buried in her words. While she can? Does she think we have an expiration date?
“If that’s the case, we should take advantage, don’t you think?” I press a slow, deliberate kiss beneath her ear ’cause that’s where she likes it. “Under the stars. Just you, me, and—”
“Bears,” she cuts in.
I pull back, blinking. “Bears?”
I had not thought about wildlife since I’ve been here, not once.
She nods, face completely serious. “You know ... big, furry creatures? Roam the woods? Have a taste for eating unsuspecting loversfuckingoutside. That happened once in one of my true crime podcasts.”
A grisly chill runs down my spine. I glance over my shoulder, eyes narrowing at the dark tree line, searching for bears. I gulp. “You’re messing with me.”
She tilts her head. “Am I?”
