“Is that it?” His earlier undertone of frustration had gone and all that was left was irritation.

“What else do you want me to say?” She didn’t want to be deliberately antagonistic but she didn’t need this drama or anything else from him and was confused as to what else he did want.

“I don’t know, but at least pretend you give a shit!” He shouted at her now.

“I did care, but we are no longer together and I haven’t seen or heard off you for over six months and now you decide you want to go back to how things were and I am supposed to roll over and accept it. I have no feelings towards you at all, Simon. In fact, I am struggling to realise what I ever saw in you in the first place, so please do not call me, text me or turn up at my home. You moved on and so have I,” she said, then hung up.

Her hands were still trembling from Simon’s call when the phone rang again as she took out the card attached to the flowers.

Good morning, hope you like the flowers.

I decided that pinks and creams matched

your complexion, everywhere! Last night

was amazing. I told you neither of us

would be crap.

She laughedat his message as she picked up her phone.

“Steph, Mr Brooker is on the line for you,” said Rosie.

“Thanks, put him through and if Simon calls back please tell him I am unavailable.”

“Hello, Stephanie Pryor,” she announced unnecessarily.

“Hello, Miss Pryor, how are you this fine morning?”

“I am very well, if a little tired,” she replied, laughing.

“I can relate to that, but worth every sleepless moment don’t you think?” He laughed back.

“Without a doubt,” she replied seriously. “Speaking of which, thank you for the flowers, they’re beautiful, but you may need to stop sending me flowers or people will talk.”

“Glad you like them and I will send you flowers whenever I want and if people want to talk, let them,” he said flippantly.

Steph gave a gentle shake of her head but admired his easy confidence. “That may not look too good for either of us but thank you anyway.”

“Has that idiot ex-boyfriend been in touch? Did you check your messages from him?” Jon turned serious suddenly.

“Yeah, he phoned earlier, but I basically told him to sod off.”

“Do you think he’ll get the message now?” Jon didn’t sound convinced that he would.

“I don’t know, but I suppose I’ll find out soon enough and I’ve told Rosie to tell him I am unavailable if he calls again.”

“He called you at your office? At your place of work? What a dickhead. If he keeps calling you there you will need to do something about him because that will soon become office gossip. Although, you were supposed to call me if he contacted you there.” His initial irritation was short lived as it gave way to something that sounded a lot like concern. “Are you okay though?”

“I have literally just hung up from him, but I am fine.” She made her best attempt at sounding sincere in the sentiment but Simon did have a knack for making her nervous, so tried to change the subject. “Steve Cannon called me earlier.”

“Steve? Why?” Jon sounded both surprised and suspicious.

“He wants me to attend an informal gathering to smooth a few ruffled feathers I think. Some of your legal team think they’re being limited by your contract with us,” she explained.

“I see. Keep me posted.” He sounded entirely business-like now.
