“Tell me you got him? Because if you haven’t then I will find that bastard and kill him myself,” Mase threatens.

Jimmy appears behind Mase and looks shocked and saddened when his eyes meet mine making me cry as I recognise the eyes he shares with Mase.

“He looks like you,” I tell Jimmy and Mase, “Byron, he has Harding eyes.”

Mase holds me and rocks me gently, trying not to add further pressure to my behind.

Some police officers appear next.

“Miss Carrington, if we could get a statement,” one says.

I’m preparing to stand then feel self-conscious when I remember that I must still look dishevelled.

“Could this wait?” Mase asks but Jimmy shakes his head.

“Now would be better. At the hospital?” he asks the police officer who is nodding grimly.

“It can wait,” Mase begins, but I interrupt.

“It’s fine. Can Mase come with me?”

“Of course,” the police officer says. “You might want to bring some spare clothes.”

“I can fetch you some,” Jimmy offers. “From Charlotte,” he adds, seeing my face at the thought of him going through my clothes.

“Thank you.” I’m already getting to my feet when someone comes bursting through the door but is held back by the police who are speaking to him.

“Sir, we’ll take your statement in a moment. It won’t take long. You’ll just need to explain what happened before you caught the suspect.”

Mase is standing, extending a hand of gratitude, preparing to say thank you and in doing so I see the man in front of us.

“Scott,” I whisper.

“Hey, Liv. I’m sorry. I should have known you’d lied about him not doing it. I left about a year after you…with Jane.” The way he saysJanetells me she was a victim of Raymond too. I feel sad that anyone endured what I had after I left. That I could have done more.

“Look, we’re on our way to the hospital and you need to give a statement to the police,” Mase begins, pulling his jacket more tightly around me.

“Scott, don’t go, don’t leave,” I plead. “It wasn’t your fault—” I find myself disappearing beneath his arms as he clings to me in a slightly too tight hug.

“I’ll take care of him, Olivia,” Jimmy assures me before Mason is leading me outside to a waiting ambulance.

“Thank you.” Mase pauses as we pass Scott. “For stopping him from getting away.”

Chapter 61

Mason

“Are you sure you want to do this?” I eye Olivia cautiously.

“Absolutely.” She smiles and gives me a twirl so I can fully appreciate the glory that is my girl wearing a very figure-hugging dress in a glitter rose gold colour. It is sleeveless and has a turtleneck. It clings everywhere and once my gaze gets as far as her legs, I can’t take my eyes off the detail that has one leg exposed from the thigh and the other covered at an angle to the knee by an angled drape.

“You look amazing,” I tell her, and she does. “We could stay in.” I take a step closer.

“Not tonight,” she replies, stepping back to avoid my lips hitting hers that are glossy and begging to be kissed. “I’ll make it up to you later.” She smirks and manages to look even sexier.

“You bet you will.” Taking in her ridiculously high shoes that are a succession of straps winding up her legs I add, “And keep the shoes on when you do.”

“Come on, dinner, and then I am all yours,” she promises with a wink.
