Erik looked as confused as I felt. “Yes,” he said. “That’s what you do.”

“No. I mean, I made her angry when I wasn’t trying to.”

He blinked a few times and asked, “How?”

Letting out a deep breath, I said, “She thought I asked her to wear red because I wanted to embarrass her in front of everyone.”

“It was a stupid move.”

“It was not! I didn’t try to humiliate her. I was trying to prove a point to Ignacio.”

“What point were you trying to prove?” Erik asked, eyes narrowing.

“That she’s mine.”

He rubbed his hands down his face and looked at me. “You need to stop.”

“I know the rules.”

“Do you?”

“Yes, Erik. I just don’t always follow them.”

Erik shook his head. “She’s been through enough.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s not my place to say, but she’s been through enough and she doesn’t need you adding to it.”

“We’re both adults, Erik. We both know what this is.”

“Do you? I’ve never seen you so possessive of a being. Things, sure, but never another being. Please, Gray. Just let the girl be.”

“Why are you making it sound like it’s all down to me?”

“Isn’t it?”

“You tell me. She seems to be as eager as I am.”

“But you should know better.”

“We grant people’s desires. That’s all I do for her.”

“She doesn’t pray to you!”

“She still wants me!”

The conversation had broken down, and as the anger flared, auras sparked into life.

Green wisps moved in front of Erik, and we turned to see Sloan, childless, standing in the room.

“Grayson,” she said firmly. “I’d appreciate you not starting a fight today. I think we’re both too tired for that.”

I dropped my aura, and so did Sloan.

“Do either of you want to tell me what’s going on?” I asked them, trying to control my anger.

“Scott,” Erik said quietly.
