I sat on the arm of the sofa and stared down at him. “Aren’t they going to want only family there?”

“The others will be there,” Gray informed me. “I’m sure your friend Charlotte will be there.”

“Yeah, well, that’s kind of their assignment and I’m not working today.”

“You’ll come as a friend to the family. I’m sure Erik will be thrilled to see you.”

The way Gray looked at me told me he wasn’t playing a game. It was a simple request and even though there was a nagging voice in the back of my mind, my curiosity had me agreeing.

“Sure,” I said. “Why not? But I need to shower and get changed first.”

As I left the room he shouted after me, “Wear something red!”

“Why red?” I asked, popping my head back into the room.

“We’re honouring Erik and the birth of his child. Red is his colour. Simple tradition, Scott. You don’t want to be disrespectful, do you?”

I sighed. “I’ll check if I have anything, otherwise I’ll have to attend naked.”

A spark flickered in Gray’s eyes, and they turned black.

“Don’t even think about it,” I warned him.

“Too late.”

Before he had any more ideas, I ran up the stairs to get ready.

Red was not a colour I wore often, and it took some time before I found an old red jumpsuit in the back of the wardrobe. I slipped it on and gave myself a onceover. The plunging neckline might be deemed a little inappropriate, but it was all I had.

I met Gray back in the living room to find him dressed in a red suit with a white shirt.

“What do you think?” he asked.

“I don’t like it,” I replied, shaking my head. “Red doesn’t suit you.”

“Scott.” Gray laughed. “Only you would be that blatantly honest and oblivious to offending a God.”

My cheeks heated at my misstep.

“But I agree,” he said. “Red is much more Erik’s colour. I prefer black.”

His gaze ran over my body, taking me in from head to toe and lingering on my curves.

“It’s all I have,” I said, wrapping my arms around myself.

“I have no complaints.”

“Grayson.”

“But I will say that I’d prefer you in black as well.”

I wasn’t sure how to take the compliment, so I let it slide. “How are we getting there?”

He rolled his eyes before stepping up to me. Gray’s knuckles brushed against my cheek as he said, “Best behaviour now, Scott. This is my family.”

The world went dark and when it brightened again, we were in Dr Martyn Hankel’s living room. He was hosting Sloan and Erik. Martyn was a prominent physicist with a soft nature and the perfect host for the couple.

The house was packed with Gods and Goddesses, and a few people working on the project.
