Gray looked panicked. “Listen to me. It’ll be okay, but you need to keep a hold on your emotions, alright?”

“I’m smoking from my hands, and you want me to stay calm?!”

The tendrils pulsed out around me.

Hunter got to his feet, and there was another flash of blue that snaked towards me. I threw up my hand where a wall of gold appeared, hidden behind a solid wall of black that Gray projected.

“SOMEONE BETTER TELL ME WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!” Hunter’s voice shook me to the core, and I dropped my arms, but Gray kept his aura in place.

“Grayson,” Hunter hissed, advancing on him. “What is she?”

I would have liked to know the answer too, although I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t terrified to find out. Curiosity did not outweigh my fear. Ignorance was a land that I wished to live in.

“Hunter,” Erik said.

Hunter knocked Erik off his feet, and I turned to him, but Gray grabbed my arm and kept me beside him.

“Answer. The. Question,” Hunter seethed, looking feral.

Gray looked at me before going back to his brother. “Quentin is a demigoddess.”

My head snapped up to him. “What?”

Gray looked at me and I could see it in his eyes that this wasn’t a joke, and it wasn’t a lie. What he was saying was the truth. And my knees buckled. Gray was there, arms around me, keeping me upright.

“I suggest you all come back to the council chambers, and I’ll alert the rest to join us. This needs to be dealt with,” Hunter said.

“You’ll let us explain.”

“The entire council will decide. Get there, now. Don’t make me ask again.”

“Come on, Grayson,” Sloan said, gripping Erik’s hand tightly.

Gray’s aura wrapped around us, and the next thing I knew, we were in a large stone chamber, where twelve thrones stood at the back of the room. Gray still held onto me, and the others joined us.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“What’s going on? What did you mean back there?”

Gray’s hands were on my upper arms. “Listen to me. You have to listen to me now.”

“What am I?”

The gold-coloured tendrils pulsed out from me, making everyone but Gray step back.

“Quentin, you need to calm down. We can help you, but you just need to let us in.”

I felt out of my depth here. Thin gold wisps fluttered around my hands. They might have been considered beautiful if they didn’t cause my amygdala to work overtime. All I could see was a threat, as panic seized my muscles and pushed through my body with every beat of my heart.

“You’re a demigoddess, Quentin,” Gray told me again gently.

“How? I… How?”

“Your mother was one of us, Quentin. Mallory, your mother, she was my cousin,” Elva said.

My head swam with this information, mixed with the various voices that kept pinging around my skull.

My mother.
